Does like europ have halloween there cause i know in like canada and usa have halloween because i live here and shit but i was just wondering about england or something.....
we have it in the uk, but not to the same extent as the usa. like we have a few parties and some kids go trick or treating, but hardly anyone really. and houses dont get decorated as much either. pumpkins sell out though!! but i have portuguese and greek flatmates, and the portuguese guy said he wouldnt dress up wtih us last night for a party in one of the other flats coz they dont celebrate it and he wasnt going to start celebrating it now. im not sure about greece though, liz wasnt very clear whenwe were talking about going next door, but she didnt dress up either and left quite early and went back to our kitchen for most of the night
The whole idea of celebrating halloween is a totally american idea...over here in england i think we want to do it as kids because we see american kids doing it in american films...christmas is fine and birthdays, but halloween is just a waste of money.
Halloween, All Hallows Eve, started in Europe. It was an ancient pagan festival, swhich began here long before the invasion of Christianity. European settlers took it to America and Canada....
in england halloween is just another excuse to get stoned but seriously, no one really celebrates it in my area
It originated in England, no idea why they don't still celebrate it. They DO celebrate Guy Falkes day though. That's the essential difference between England and the USA. ENGLAND - celebrates on Guy Falkes day an UNSUCCESSFUL attempt at overthrowing the government THE USA - celebrates on the 4th of July a SUCCESSFUL attempt at overthrowing a government.
It's just some pointless pagan ritual. But then again so are Christmas and Easter, never mind, eh. We don't 'celebrate' it - it's not something you really celebrate - it's just a bit of fun, a tradition. Anyone who DOES celebrate is celebrating All Saints day - which comes from the same thing "All hallows evening" - Halloween, but All Sants day is a Christian thing whilst Halloween is a pagan thing, and you don't celebrate any Saint's day by trying to scare the fuck out of people, now do you? Well I suppose Christians in America are rather big on terrifying people but that's their business, not ours. What we CERTAINLY don't do (well some people do but I frown upon them for it) is this ridiculous 'trick or treat' thing. I don't know about you but I think the idea of sending your children out to be a nuisance, what is effectively begging is just downright rude and doesn't teach them much in the way of good manners. Dress them up and let them go to parties, by all means, but fucking hell - leave the neighbours in peace! TWO WEEKS (yes, that wasn't a typo), I was quietly enjoying a pre-match meal in a noodle bar on the Uxbridge Road by Shepherd's Bush Central line (I recommend it - good food and good value) when these youngsters in costumes came in to the restaurant with their battle cry of 'trick or treat'. They came right up to me and went into denial when I told them that they were early and Halloween was two weeks away. Fortunately the restaurant staff were able to get rid of them quickly. It started with smoking, then came all the horrible attrocities committed against the English language. Now they've taught our children to go out begging - it's bad enough that some people HAVE to do it, we could do with out our well-off sprogs joining in. Giving us Jazz and Star Trek is only going to get the yanks so much good will. Sooner or later they're going to have to sort themselves out before they make me REALLY angry. (or should that be 'real mad'? - jazus, a five year old can speak better english than your average yank).
I think there are a few more differences than that And people do celebrate Halloween here, and it's still commercialised, just people don't go quite as mad over it. That's what happens when you found a nation based on an original population of criminals and religious fanatics
I dunno bout in not so jolly england but here in yankland...people enjoy seeing the lil kids dressed up in their lil costumes and willingly go out n purchase candy or goodies for the kids...if this is begging then they are pretty willing victims i would say... and us stupid yanks have a simple solution for unwanted beggar children...we turn off our porch lights ...easily sorts out all those bothersome nuisance children.. i understand i am in the UK forum here but... im the last person to stand up as a proud american and i understand the disdain for us felt by the rest of the world but i must say...ive heard some english folks butcher the english language far worse than the average american.... forget the generalizations n practice a bit of tolerance instead....
Indeed, I've known some very intelligent Americans, and some very stupid Brits. It's hard to generalise. It's just a shame your president gives you such a bad image....
has any american president since wilson given a good image of america? they are either stupid, a womanizer, a b-list hollywood actor or a damn criminal(or a mixture of the above) then again, i cant htink of any world leader that gives a good image of their country. p.s. i would hardly call trick or treating begging. Dont be such a scrooge..be NICE AND GENEROUS! Sheesh
