OK, so I've been using Depo Provera for about a year and a half now. Since you can only take it safely for 2 years, I need to start thinking of another method. The pill is out for me because my medication makes it ineffective. I really don't want to go through the hassle of condoms or a diaphram, so I was considering getting an IUD. The DR giving me my yearly exam said I can't get one unless I've had children already. Does thais make sense??? He was pretty much an asshole all around, very rough, no bedside manner, actually yelled at me because I'd prefer to keep taking Depo. Yelled at me!

Anyway, can anyone give me more infor about the IUD, how well it works, can you feel it, and have you ever heard about not being able to get one because you DON'T already have kids?

    Thanks in advance, ladies!

    find a new doctor

try doing research, ie from planned parenthood or other clinics that have a lot of info on birth control. I don't remember much about the IUD to be honest with you, except that it needs to be changed every so often to make sure it doesn't do nasty things to your uterus or anything. I know my mother used to use one, but I can't recall if it was before or after me

To be honest, I'm not crazy about the idea either, but I don't know what else to do. Like I said, can't take oral birth control because my meds will make it only 70% effective or so, and that's just too big a risk for my taste. Hate condoms, since I'm painfully allergic to spermicide, and sometimes that's all you can find around here (don't know why, never had a problem anywhere else I've lived). Can't do the Depo after a few months. Sucks.

I'd see another doctor, or at least talk with Planned Parenthood. I have never heard that you need to have had kids to use the IUD, but I am not a doctor and my knoweldge in that area is lacking. Your doctor doesn't seem like he is very helpful, though.

I though if a medication makes BC ineffective, that is the case for all forms of BC, well all hormone forms.

I know some of the other women on here will know more than me about this. I'm sure they'll be around to offer advice anytime now =)

I have heard too, that it is better if you had kids before. Don't remember the reasons though

This WAS the Doctor from Planned Parenthood. He was such an asshole! I found another local clinic that takes Medicaid, though, so I'm making an appointment with her to see what she has to say. I'd love to just stay on the Depo, but it's almost been 2 years, so...

It just doesn't make sense to me that you have to have kids already before you can have an IUD.
