Is the price of an apartment pretty steep up there? Is it relatively easy to find a job?

Why else move to Vancouver? The high crime? The price of real estate through the roof?

Most people move there cause they think it's legal to smoke pot (it isn't - it's just that when you have a raging heroin epidemic you worry less about grass)

orrr maybe some people move to vancouver because they love the oceans, or the mountains...maybe they skateboard? theres 4 or 5 skateparks in vancouver, snowboard? whistler and mt. seymore resorts are within driving range...
Not to mention good jobs, breathtaking scenery, and just generally one of the more liberal and layed back citys in canada
Vancouver is a beautiful city man, try looking at the more positive side of things...

So what would be wrong with Seattle or Portland?

Also the most dire and crime infested.

If you want to go up there for free, be Chinese and say "I am a refugee" and you'll get a free house, free health care and cash money to spend.

    RE: Chinese and crime

Not suggesting a link between the two.

Listen, Vancouver isn't all granola and smoking dope all over the place....

There's rife homelessness, some of the most dire living conditions in North America (third world missionaries go into the worst places).... a huge income disparity where some live in million dollar penthouses while many live on the streets....

I've been to NYC, New Orleans etc. and I've NEVER seen people shooting up using water from a puddle in the street in the open air during the day.

Shall I get into the politics of the NDP?

Vancouver can be expensive - it depends on where in the area you decide to live. White Rock (I lived there ) is beautiful.. really close to the ocean (and US border) but it is usually quite expensive. If you choose to live in, let's say, New Westminster, the rents are a lot less and, in some cases, really cheap. The Vancouver transit system is good so it's easy to get around no matter where you are there. If you live "right in Vancouver" you'll pay through the ass and.. yeah.. there is a healthy crime level happening down there. We lived in New West before we relocated (I now live on a isolated island in the Pacific northwest) and New West was fine, man! Cheap rent and, suprisingly, a lot of cool people there (at least where we lived)! Hope this helps!
