I woke up this morning and my right ear can't hear anything. I went to sleep fine and I woke up to my alarm with only one ear. It sucks, and I think I'll probably have to go see a doctor but I figured I'd try my luck on here first.

Does anybody know what it might be, and what the treatment is? Thanks.

The sudden loss of hearing in one ear in someone your age is unusual. Did you sleep on that side? is it really a total loss of hearing (hold a witch or something that makes a soft sound first to one ear then to the other) are you taking any meds. Certain antibiotics can cause hearing lost. There is a rare autoimmune disease

Autoimmune inner ear disease (AIED) is an inflammatory condition of the inner ear. It occurs when the body's immune system attacks cells in the inner ear that are mistaken for a virus or bacteria. AIED is a rare disease occurring in less than one percent of the 28 million Americans with a hearing loss.

However, that would be a diagnosis of last resort. Have you had a head injury in the last few days - been exposed to very loud noise (hunting - music etc) Have a history of major wax problems in your ears?

That covers about all the possibilities that I can think of - if it does not clear and you cannot identify a simple cause best to go to the doctor. He has an otoscope to look in your ear with which is hard for me to do over this computer (grin) - good luck

I can think of one more possibility...

You could have a cyst or tumor in your inner ear. I met a guy a few days ago who had one that had spread so much he was losing hearing in both ears, losing his memory and going blind. Not to alarm you. It is a possibility though at your age.

The only one there that applies to me is the head injury one, that was last thursday though. I had gotten in a fight and recieved a concussion. I don't think that that could be the reason though, because of the injury being so long ago.

Yes, it could be related I would see a doctor at once if your hearing is not completely back to normal- effects from head injuries can turn up weeks after the event.

Do you do oxycodone or hydrocodone? Hearing loss is a side effect of drug use.

Have you tried cleaning your ears? Pour some proxide in your ear and then tilt your head so it don't come up...then wash it out, in the shower or whatever. See if that helps.

Yeh it could be something simple like wax build up. Though maybe not if its full deafness in that ear..

Well I hope to dog that he is not in hospital with a subdural hematoma or something. I sent him a PM with no result. Do post again if you read this and let us all know that you are still breathing.

Yeah I'm still fine, sorry for not replying (I could've sworn I had replied to the pm).

Anyways, I tried cleaning it out with Hydrogen Peroxide and it didn't really work, so I'm hoping it goes away in like a week or so.

A year and a half ago a very loud noise blasted straight into my right ear from my mobile phone. Ive been partially deaf in that ear since. Its scary as hell. Ive been to docs, had x-rays, but they say its probs permanent n theres nothin they can do. Definitely get it checked out as soon as possible.

Sudden deafness can be caused by a whole number of reasons. Best to get it checked out. Some of these can be very nasty indeed.
There could be some thing the doc could do for it. I can tell you that living in a world which relys on being able to hear stuff is not the easiest of things. I can't hear what people say quite often and rely on being able to lipread. And whats more unilateral hearing loss can cause alsorts of problems. You won't be able to pick out where a sound is coming from and you will have difficulty speaking to people in noisy places like a bar or something. So really it is best to see if you can get something sorted.
    Matt
