Would you place this album as progressive rock?

Styx in my opinion, and without sounding harsh....is like a water downed Rush.I swear the lead singer sounds like Geddy Lee on zoloft. But on the fair side, they do have a few decent songs(One of them, whose name escapes me managed to creep into my head and stay there.)

Styx are Progressive Rock Related. "The Grand Illusion" (1977) is an example of Art Rock.

Dennis DeYoung is the lead singer I believe your refering to, but also James Young or Tommy Shaw are the lead singer in other songs.

Great band although I think Pieces of Eight is better than G.I. The band really should have done another album like POE rather than the lame Cornerstone.

I agree, Pieces of Eight is my favorite Styx album, with Grand Illusion and Paradise Theatre a distant second.

Some of the early stuff is interesting. "Lady" from Styx II, "Midnight Ride" from Equinox, the whole of the Crystal Ball album, "Witch Wolf" from (I think) Serpent. The first album is not that good though there are signs of the vocal harmonies that would come good on the later stuff. Shame there is no live concert footage from the classic 70's period and they were huge in the USA! Any ideas why there is no footage (apart from a couple of brief promo's).

It's commerical prog. Progressive rock went from being mostly experimental and artistic in the late 60's/early 70's, to being commerical and radio-oriented in the mid/late 70's. So it's prog, but it's second-string prog.
