i have to make my money some how..... only other fabric store here is Joanne and they are also a chain and more expensive. If it comes down to me shopping for fabric at wal mart to feed my kids or my kids not eating because i cant afford inventory.... I wold rather give into wal mart than let my family starve.

Funky ~ I completely unerstand where you are coming from and unfortunately for most people it's the same thing, but like GrimJivey, I have to agree Wal-Mart is a horrible corporation to give your money to.

It's almost impossible to buy something that isn't somehow connected to a large company like Walmart. Even independant dealers buy most of their material from such a place.

Yeah, hard to find a fabric store that isn't part of a corporation.
Gotta make room for alla the holiday fabrics and get rid of the summer/halloween stuff.

    O.K.
    Live and let shop?

The more we shop at walmart, the more we reduce the quality of life in the town we shop in as well as the overseas towns filled with sweatshops where people are being paid less that a dollar a day. So how about "Shop wisely so others (the worlds REAL poor) can live in a manor that is at least similar to the poor in the U.S".

We hippies (myself included) like to go off on how hard things are for us here in this overlly wealthy, and increasingly right wing country. But like it or not, WE ARE ALL RICH COMPAIRED TO THE WORLD AS A WHOLE. I hope we never lose sight of that fact.

I seriously doubt that any of our kids are actually at risk of starvation.

We as Americans are at or near the top of the "food chain" Our actions directly effect the rest of the world, more that their actions effect us.

"I'm to poor" is no reason to ignore the plight of the rest of the world, and our own community.

I can't tell anyone not to go to walmart. I've gone and will probably go again.

And just so you all know I started in the food service industry when I was 15 y/o making $3.85/hr. and now 15 years later, I make about $18,000/yr. working in the same field. My parents combined incomes totaled about $22,000/yr when I was growing up, and they make much less now. So don't get high and mighty with me about being poor.

honestly the whole point of my thread was to let some mamas in on a good deal, there is no fabric store in my town that isnt a a big corporation. for that matter the only grocery stores here that arent big companies are the asian markets run from little old houses.......

i try to buy organic, non sweat shop made, mom and pop products when I can but seriously I do not haVe enough money to buy all KYND products all the time. Seems to me the less involved in anything bad the product is the more it costs. there is a kynd cafe downtown and if I buy a sandwich there the bill is about $17.

If anyone can point me to a kynd inexpensive fabric store than by all means do so...

But I feel attacked since I tryed to help some other mamas out and all of a sudden people come here trying to make me feel bad for shopping at wal mart...

no my kids arent starving but I like to give them more to eat for dinner than a pack of ground turkey and a box of mac and cheese

i am not trying to be high and mighty about being poor, my parents and I lived in a trailer for years because they couldnt afford a house and for the last few years I took care of a family of 4 on less than $700 a month, if you are on a tight budget...... it is hard as shit to not buy the cheapest things possible. you totally missed the point of my whole thread!!!

i dont want to argue but dont hate on me for buying 40 yards of fabric at wal mart when my cash woldve bought me enough to make maybe 1 skirt if I bought fabric somewhere else.

If you are complaining about fabric in this situation, you don't know much about fabric. I understand that you don't want to support them, but the fabric you get at wal mart is the EXACT same fabric you get at any other craft store. It is cheaper at wal mart because they can buy more of it than an average crafts store. Everyone is selling the same "sweat shop" fabrics and I don't know how to get around that without going into the poor house. If all of the mamas on this board only used hand made fabrics not only would they be broke, but their pieces would be too expensive for any of us to afford and they would not be able to do what they are doing at all.

Thanks for the tip FunkyPhresh I will check it out.

Funky ~ I wasn't attacking you as you can clearly see if you read my post. I was simply saying that yes I completely understand your situation as do many others who are in the same boat (myself included), but I still think Wal-Mart is evil. That's it end of story. I was not telling people to stop shopping there or to starve their children just so they didn't support Wal-Mart.

As for fabrics.... there are many great places online that sell pretty inexpensive organic, hemp, cotton fabrics that do not come from the same sources that Wal-mart and joannes do. They may not be cheaper than what you pay at Wal-Mart or Joannes, but they are available at lower costs if you can buy in bulk.

Again, I was not attacking you in any way. I don't walk in your shoes therefor I cannot tell you where to shop. I was simply making a statement about a company.

I NEVER CLAIMED TO KNOW A DAMN THING ABOUT FABRIC!

However, I know this much, This statement is completely untrue...

"but the fabric you get at wal mart is the EXACT same fabric you get at any other craft store."

You CAN buy fabric that is not the same thing that comes from walmart. There are suppliers who do not sell to walmart because they don't produce enough volume or they simply cannot afford to sell there product at the price walmart wants to pay.

FunkyPhresh, I'm sorry if it seems I've singled you out, I didn't mean to make you feel attacked.

I don't want to piss off any of you mamas, but if we, the forward thinking liberal hippies arn't the first ones to make the sacrifice who will?

Yes walmart is undenyably cheaper, but those low low prices drive down the prices on the products we (all you mamas and me) make. I bake bread for a living. There is no f***ing way I can sell a loaf of my bread for less than $3.50, even at that price I'll make about $.45. Walmart can sell loaves of bread 3 for $1. Granted the quality is much different, but 8 out of 10 people are going to pass by my bread and go for the cheap stuff. I'm sure that you all could get a bit more for your hand made dresses if Americans had not been spoiled by the artificially low prices that come from cheap forign labor.

Of course Walmart is not entirelly to blame for those problems but they are the largest retailer in the world.

Again, I AM SORRY to offend, but I'm standing my ground.:&
(which isn't easy when its one dude trying to take on a multitude of Mamas)

I'm sorry, but this thread has gone WAAAY off topic. Bring up the evils of walmart in consumer advocacy, but this forum is about fashion and crafts.

Thanks, Robin, for the tip! I appreciate it!

Don't ya think I'd be "preaching to the choir" in consumer advocacy?

    Edit*

I've made the best case I can (under the circumstances).

I leave y'all to your fashion and crafts

I can't stand Wal-Mart anyway. Never have. And not because of whatever you're talking about. I can't stand having to climb over piles of toys, clothes, and food that have been spilled into the aisles by people who were too careless to pick them up and put them back on the shelf. And none of the people at the one near me can speak English, which is very frustrating.

Ditto! Actually there already is one or two evil Walmart threads.
I support others when I can and where it makes a difference. Bakery goods are one of those places but when it comes to making a purchase that I need from this corporation or that one....does it really matter what one it is? Rhetorical, no answer required.
My day off...imma go hit the thrift shops and wallyworld! One thing I've been doing is looking for large(ish) items at thrift shops and recycling the fabric. After all, that was what quilts were usually made from, clothing recycled because of the cost of cloth. All fabric was used untill it was no longer servicable.
