You can probably walk up to a mile in temperatures down to about 30f, provided that the wind is calm. You can also walk in snow up to about 2 inches deep. Avoid packed down ice & snow. You'll get no traction. Start out slow, by going on short walks, and gradually conditioning your bare feet to the cold. When footwear is needed, wear flip flops, or sandals without socks. This will help condition your bare feet to the cold.

I'm with you all the way, and I do barefoot in weather conditions you just described, as a routine here, (Maine) up to a point. I am outside all day, and that's a long time even for my bare soles to be in contact with the frozen ground, or the tops of my feet to be in the cold air. I do give it all I have, but, again, up to a point.

Earlier in this thread I posted two pics of Bar Harbor and nearby, under conditions where flops or sandals just aren't enough beyond a few seconds or so (my driveway, ONLY)---I'm not kidding. These are the icebox conditions many of you never see--- I imagine very few on this board have to deal with severity like that. Just think, at my age I can barefoot around that town for 7 to 8 months of the year! That's pretty delightful.

I think I found my limit. This morning it is 34F and sunny. I had to put the dogs in the kennel before I went to work which meant traversing 100 yards of grass. The grass was wet with dew and oh so cold. The concrete driveway wasn't bad at all. By the time I returned to its warmth, my feet were numb.

A new batch of snow has arrived in central NY state. I'm going out to expand my limits and plan to do so every day again this winter. Hope I'm not the only one who truly enjoys this. I don't think I am. Barefoot hiking has become not only my favorite hobby, but a great stress reducer. Anyone else feel they don't want to give up the fun this winter?

I don't plan to give it up. I'm still BF as much as I can be. The temps here aren't too bad yet, except in the morning. I will continue to travel BF even if I do get the occasional WTF look.

Glad to hear it !! and the WTF looks are funny sometimes, I guess they don't know how comfortable and fun BF can be.

Well, you already know how I am about this! I still haven't put on shoes, but I've been in flops and Chaco sandals a lot lately. Winter is finally about to start, so the shoes, already waiting in the truck, will probably go on in time for this week's snowstorm. I'll need them for when I work at one of my outdoor jobs, pruning, etc. Not for driving, shopping, chillaxing here at the house, etc.

The snow keeps getting deeper here. And I've still managed a lot of BF hiking not as much as I'd like but enough. My tollerance to the cold is developing everyday. It's amazing how warm your feet can stay in a pair of flips. I've worn boots when operating the snowblower and my toes hate the constriction.

I managed all this winter barefoot with just the occasional foray into flip flops when it snowed once and a couple of well below zero frosts. I did one outing barefoot in snow. I picked up my gf from work, didn't worry about shoes for the few steps on my crutches to the car. When i picked her up she wanted to go to the supermarket so I ended up having to get across a snow covered carpark barefoot. Crutches draw enough attention, but bare feet in snow really complete the look!
