Hey. I am looking for some metal or hard rock stuff that also has a sort of ambience. Stuff that is heavy yet also melodic/ambient, with singing not screaming. I have listened to Dream Theater and The Gathering, but I am looking for some different bands to listen to. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

    Ben.

for that you want to look for stuff under the goth metal category... alot of them have like female singing that isnt screaming I also like cradle of filth for that they have brilliant instrumentals although if you dont want screaming you probably wont like it as much, you can check out the names of some bans at gothmetal.net though.

The newest album of Arcturus, called 'Sideshow symphonies': playful progressive post-black, with wonderful melodic vocals.

Falkenbach's very convincing album 'Ok nefna tysvar ty', rather melancholic and sometimes chanted vocals on top of lots of old germanic folk on a baribly audible base of metal

Iced Earth's whole discography is definitely recommended, great heavy metal band

An album you MUST listen to is Nordland I by Bathory. Slow, majestic, and atmospheric.

Also check out some songs by Forefather (The shield-wall, Ours is the kingdom...), they're definitely black metal but have chanted choruses alongside screaming and although the drum computer is slightly irritating they have a decent sense of the almighty epic riff-blastbeat combination. Maybe you'd like more subdued material more... I can really recommend The golden dragon and Keep marching on, all on the album Ours is the kingdom.

in the hard rock end of things early monster magnet (spine of god) or most of the stoner rock/metal sub genre (cathedral, candlemas, trouble, st. vitus etc..) has a lot of ambient extended pieces
