If this is in the wrong place then I apologise, I coudn't find anywhere appropriate. Is it possible to be addicted to more than one substance at a time, e.g. if I was an alcoholic, could I be a crack/smack-head too? (that's a really sh*t example, sorry).

I've just finished reading Naked Lunch. Burroughs says that heroin addicts don't respond well to alcohol, it has little or no effect on them.

    Howdy,
In my experience, people can easily transfer their addiction from booze to smack to wizz to gambling. Lot's of smackhead's finnally kick the gear only to replace it with booze.
I've always loved a toke and treated it more like tea than a drug, honest, i was constantly stoned and loved it. recently i've suffered terrible blues, i found cutting out ganja really helps, anyone else found that ganja herb gets them depressed? Please send me a message incase i don't find this thead again.
    peace

While you can be addicted to multiple substances, its more likely for someone to concentrate their efforts to one drug.

Opiates and alcohol act on the same receptor in the human brain, that´s why...

Well said, but a better word would be addicted to euphoria (the stat of mood alter.) And yes what was said about the Gambling thing is true as well. Alcohol is just as much of a drug then any other drug you can think of. A lot of this addiction stuff is inherited by a gene marker in your brain. This is activated when you start using drugs. Theoretically if you are a drug addict (even if your addicted to one drug you are a drug addict.) and you take any other drug you like then you can very easily become addicted to it. You are actually addicted to the drug before you take it. Don't be fooled, addiction to drugs are a bad thing because drug addiction always, always progresses in time weather you are using any drugs or not. I suggest using your addictive personality and find you a kick ass hobby.

actually, it's very common to get addicted to more than one substance, it goes like this; say you are a speed freak, and when you come down, u feel like SHIT, and need somthing to take the edge off, so u take some valium, or have som vodka/beer..... and instead of ENDURING the after high, you try to hide it's effects with other drugs...., then you are in a viscious circle...

I think this is a good point. I've noticed this among my junky pals. Identifying yourself as "fucked up" is a stick to beat yourself with, you may hide from these feelings in drugs, secondly it's an excuse for bad behavior, "typical me I always fuck up like this because i'm fucked up"
you then effectively give yourself lisense to break any deal or, let down your mates, lunch out debts etc.
I feel this is a more important component of addiction than the chemical side of it, for many people.
