Sony/BMG rootkits are invasion of privacy in every sense of the word, never does it state in the eula, that they will install spyware/maleware on your pc, it stays running beyond the point of mutiple burns of the particular media,be it cd/dvd. Although the have issued a patch... It still remains running in your processes, never actually tells people how to completely how to remove it without jumping through hoops, via there web site form you need to fill out. It's the same as some repairman entering your home and planting a evesdropping device,in the very place we all feel safe, just a assumption of guilt towards all consumers. just my opinion from what i've read
Jsut read a /. reply that you may be able to load your ripper in a way that makes their rootkit let it work! Not that it was good that this ever happened. Phillips has noted that with the media they loaded their discs do not qualify as the trademarked 'CD' name, and will not toleratre them marketing them as such.
It's almost funny... New trojan virus is using the Sony rootkit hide while it spreads and infects! http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/11/10/1615239&tid=172&tid=233
I know I'm not the only one who will be boycotting Sony products in the future. I hope that everyone passes along this information, especially to the people you know who aren't up on this type of thing. I can't believe Sony would do something so stupid. Did they really think that the security experts out there wouldn't uncover this? I hope they lose a lot of money, which I'm sure they will due to all the bad publicity they are recieiving.
Read they are currently being sued in CA NY Class Action Style, the fix from the Sony/BMG website, never actually removes anything leaving it dormant, never being totaly removed, a mere patch.. The app they pass on as a quick fix, stiil reports home to papa,as the original did. They don't expect anyone to complain, they have every right to protect there investment, but to invade, personal space is beyond the scope.
