When you get to the KNSM island, turn left and follow your nose. (Food can be a bit hit or miss.) Plus DJs often spin. Phone to reserve after 16.00 on the day and be warned: it's very popular. ZAAL 100 De Wittenstraat 100 Tue-Wed 18.00, Thu 19.00 Near the Haarlemmerplein in a large old building (actually a legalised former squat). The bar is open every evening from 9pm-1am (Monday from 10pm). Earlier in the evening, on Mondays, there's a 'Kraakspreekuur' from 7-9.30pm. And every Thursday at 7pm you can get vegan food for €2 (desert €0.50 cents extra) at Voku MacMolli. Reserve from 3pm on the day at the number below. Note that on every second Wednesday of the month there is a feminist café. Van Ostadestraat 55 huis (676 1427) OCCII This legalised squat bar/club has a regular concerts (punk, hardcore, alternative, reggae, dub, experimental etc) and parties. Amstelveenseweg 134 www.occii.org VRANKRIJK This centrally-located squat (it's near the Palace) is one of the most established in the city. The bar there is open daily and run by a volunteery collective. They have a huge information board so it's a good first stop. Additionally, they put on lots of benefits, info evenings etc. They're open from 9pm daily (From 10pm Friday, 11pm Saturday). Monday is 'Queer Night'; Tuesday is Solidatarity Cocktail Evening for ASKV; Wednesday goes candlelit with cosy music; Thursday there's a 'Kraakspreekur' (8pm-9pm); Friday is a regular bar; Saturday is an alternative club night; and Sunday is film night. Spuistraat 216 www.vrankrijk.org SQUAT RESTAURANTS ACADEMIE OT301 Sunday This is the former Netherlands Film Academie, squatted November 1999, now legalised and fully renovated. It has two large performance/rehearsal spaces, a cinema, cafe and gallery space with an inspired and busy programme of [sub]cultural activities and events. The restaurant there is open every Sunday from 6pm and serves delicious vegan food for €5 (dessert costs an extra €1.25). Reserve from 4pm on the day; dinner is served at 7pm. They play cool music and project slides and service is super friendly. However, when arriving and leaving please be as quiet as possible for the neighbours. Similarly, park your bicycles away from the front door so the pavement doesn't get blocked – or put them up against windows of neighbouring buildings. Note that the restaurant is closed over the summer: check their website! Overtoom 301 http://squat.net/overtoom301 EINDE VAN DE WERELD Wednesday, Friday Technically, this restaurant on a colourful boat on the KNSM-eiland isn't a squat but it has its origins in a squat in the area and several of the cooks were the original squatters. The name of the boat is Quo Vadis. Cooks create meals using the freshest of ingredients for €5.50 (veggie) or €7.50 (meat). It's open on Wednesdays and Fridays from 6pm and, like its squat counterparts, is cash only. Opposite Javakade 21 (419 0222) DE MAYO Thursday De Mayo is a clean and comfortable space on the ground floor of a formerly squatted, now legalised, school. They have an Eat The Rich! Voku every Thursday from 8pm-1am with vegan food and cheap beer (donations welcome). They have a 'Kraakspreekuur' here every Monday from 8pm-9pm. I don't understand, I finding squatting very uncomfortable on my thighs. I notice many people from SE Asia can squat for long periods of time, though they have very slim thigh muscles. I couldn't squat for an entire meal, I would need a cusion or something....what's the attraction?
