ok, so this has probably been asked/tried by people before, but i'd like to know what you guys think about it, because i'm not sure how to just look for the information this time....

i'm curious if people have tried a method for growing pot that is used in many other areas of agriculture when you want a very low, but high quality yield.

you've all seen GIANT pumpkins and gourds and melons and vegetables and things at fairs or in the paper or wherever....usually people acheive this not simply through proper fertilization and care, but through mutilating the plant. you want an awesome pumpkin? you remove all the premature pumpkins but one on a given plant, then all the plant's energy is devoted to growing one super pumpkin. from what i understand you can do the same with some flowers, such as roses.

assuming you have a good, large bushy plant, and assuming you aren't concerned with yield so much as experimentation, is it possible to remove all but just a little of what will become the buds on a plant so that all of the normal sized plant's energy is pushed into making one super bud? i'd figure if you could get an entire plant's resources all put into one bud, it would probably grow really big and really potent. of course this would be financial suicide if you're looking to make money, but i'd think it might still be kind of cool if it could work. one really big, super potent nugget....

so, how resilient is the cannabis plant? will something like this kill it, or would it simply grow a huge bud with no increased potency? or would this possibly work the way you'd hope it would work?

i dunno, i dont grow and wont be any time soon, i was just curious what you growers have to say about this idea. any of you tried it or know of someone who has? anyone KNOW that it couldnt work?

of course, this question is hypothetical, and i know that a lot of other factors go into growing good pot....this is all assuming you have provided proper nutrition and lighting for the plant to produce high quality pot to begin with before you try altering it....

The short answer- yes, it works.
It might even increase the potency a bit.
But total yield is very likely to suffer adverse effects.

Not really worth it except as a novelty.

yeah, i'd imagine that yield would suffer terribly, but i was just curious if it could work at all more than putting it to actual use. i figure it might be cool if someone was growing on a large scale though, if they had plenty of normal plants and a healthy plant they could spare in order to get a really sweet, enormous, potent sticky nug......haha, i'd love to see a giant bud as big as my head or something :)

When I'm doing a sog indoor grow, 2.5 weeks into 12/12, about the time I switch over to flowering nute's, I cut off ALL side branches at the meristem (but NOT the leaves on the maristem).
This focuses all the plants energy to make a large central cola.
Total yield by weight is often not affected at all. But I end up with for example a 1 oz bud and a couple 1/4 oz ones instead of a bunch of smaller buds that total the same in weight.
And the potency is usually better because the buds are closer to the light.
Outside, I usually cut off a few of the lowest branches that never produce much.
