I used the word choose simply for lack of certainty. I have met those who say they chose to be gay/bi/lesbian and even straight, and those who say that there was no choice for them. For myself, it wasn't a matter of choice really. I fall in love with a person, not with their sex. I have loved many wonderful souls, some in the male body, some in the female. Mocking something you do not like or do not understand is the first step to true hatred. When you mock you do not consider the feelings of the person or group that you are making fun of. It makes them into less than you are, allowing you to says things you wouldn't say normally. After that, it's a short step to doing things you wouldn't do normally. This is how nearly every religious or racial conflict gets started. You said: And to a point, I have to agree. But idiots belong to every race, religion, and sexuality. They are universal. The problem is when people start making fun of a thing that is not universal, it becomes a point of difference, of dissension. To me, any thing that divides people unnesseccarily is a tragedy to be avoided. I know, straight people tell cruel and viscious jokes about gay people all the time, but returning the favor does not make us better, it simply brings us down to their level. I'd rather try to be better, to show the people who my life touches that there is a better way. Am I perfect? Not Hardly. I'm human, and sometimes I say things in the heat of temper, but I try, and I'm going to keep on trying. Now, that said...I cannot agree that such things as were being said here are harmless, but as I appear to be a minority of one on the subject, having said my piece, I will not post on the subject again.
And smoking pot is the first step to a full blown addiction to crack. I disagree, of course. I believe that humor, or mockery, is a great response to idiots. I was going to say "assholes" in my first message. Assholes come in every color and I like to laugh at them too. Because I find there are somethings that are too prickly to hug; but believe me, I wouldn't laugh at the fool who tries. (well, maybe.) A local gay rag in the 1970's printed an article from the editor which raised quite a flap. It was titled "I Hate Straights;" by todays standards it might be considered juvenile. But it was honest and not sarcastic, that you could tell. The editor listed various things that would surely divide glbt from str8. I can hear the outcry even today. Not from the glbt community but from the straight community. How dare he? I was astonished by the outrage from the straight press. It was as if he had called the pope a demon and the year was 1530. Their collective ego obviously needed a smack down. The idea may have influenced a piece distributed at gay pride in New York June 1990, by Queer Nation:"Queers Read This!". (See also Queer Nation Manifesto) You're going to hate this, but I believe that there is a good time and place to express righteous anger. A forum like this is the right place. The wrong place is a bomb-making room in the basement. You have a right to express your dismay at our expressions of anger. And this is the right place to do that, too. There's also a right time and place to light up a fatty. Like here and now. Bye bye.
It was a 'joke joyce', everyone can get over it now, I dont think my humour translates to americans, they dont understand irony or cynicism. And gypsy priestess what you have to say is all lovely and fluffy and nice but frankly I think your living with your head in the clouds.
Yeah, we know it was a joke. Believe me, we know cynicism around here. And I always thought the Americans invented sarcasm, until I met an Aussie. Even though you didn't hear an audible "ha ha chuckle snicker snort" (try saying that!); we understood the irony. We got the joke. But your comment sparked something. This is a forum. The best comments at a forum will do that. You should be proud of yourself, e-eye. I mean, in the US sarcasm is suppose to be provocative, ain't it the same down under?
Awww, and I like to think that its the brits who invented sarcasm. I personally have stopped being able to tell whos joking and whos being serious on this thread, but its still making me laugh
