im on the waiting list for a dorm room at my school. theres no way i can afford to live off campus unless i work fulltime, but i dont want to do that since im in school. i know i can use the computer lab and the library to get all my work done. i go to a small little school in northern vermont too so i can just stay at a local campground or on some trail around the school. my boyfriend thinks im nuts for thinking this way... but if i cant get a room before school starts i think im gonna end up living in a tent! im sure once school starts some kids will drop out so hopefulyl i can get a room!
    hmm, any thoughts?

look into the hostels... you might be able to get a place to stay there for a while... and then when people drop out you can move in!

I've been thinking about doing a similar thing, so keep in touch and let me know how it all works out!

    best of luck!

Livin' in a tent while going to college sounds like a great idea. But I am sure you'll change your mind when december rolls around...........

a hostel is a sort of cheap-o hotel... people use them a lot when travelling and such. I stayed in one in Calgary (Hostels International) for $22 a night... it's decent when you need a roof.

Living in a tent for a while is definitely an option.

I did it for 8 weeks once when I was between houses -- sold one, but the new one not ready to move into -- and I had a wife and 3 children.

But there were a few problems:\
    >Keeping clean enough to go to work
    >Rained out entirely 3 times, which is pretty discouraging when you have no other "home" to go to.
    >And I notice that you are in Vermont. I've heard that it gets cold there.
You really tough enough to tent in the snow?
Some people do, and love it. But do you?

8 weeks seemed like a very long time, and when we got back under a roof we were very happy.
Incidentally, I had lots of previous experience tenting, and lots of good gear to make the tenting experience as EZ as possible.

thanks for the words of encouragement... ill keep it posted

Wow that article was groovy! This whole thread and article has inspired me to at least look into just camping when I go to college! Not exactly where Perry Technical Institute is in Yakima, or the geography, terraine, climate, etc, of Yakima...so I'll have to do some research and stuff first before doing something liek that. If anyone lives in/camps in Yakima, PM me or something...let's chat.

My wife and I have been living in a shanty in OK for the last 2 years. We love it. It's a pretty different thing than you've been discussing, mainly because we own the land and we have electricity and running water. We built a 14 ft by 16 ft shanty out of 2by4s and canvas. We called it a tent for a little over a year because the roof was just a canvas tarp. Since then we have upgraded to sheet metal. Its cheaper than canvas tarps and dryer too. Anyway, we love it! We are NOT roughing it. We have hot and cold running water,TV(embarrased),stereo, refrigerator, double sink, full size gas range with oven and vented range hood, table and chairs, Queen size bed, computer, phone. We shower outside or in our uncompleted 'real' house. We have 2 composting bucket toilets, one inside one out. Sorry, I didnt mean to ramble. I love almost living outside.
