A question. If we are Gods children and we have been turning away from Him every chance we get...would it not make sense that He would seek out a plan to win our hearts back? I am a dad now and would do anything for my kid. If she left me I would do anything to win her heart back to me. Unfortunately religion has distorted who God is. The bible, to me, is a romatic love story of a Father who was so love sick for His family He came down and made a way for us to be with Him again. Religion does not tell us about the Grace that hung on the cross. Religion always tells you that you arenet good enough. DOnt smoke or drink or swear. DOnt listen to this music or that. Dont have sex outside of marriage, or whatever you are told to do or dont do in church. If i am to believe that I can actually gain Gods acceptance through what I do or dont do then I am suggesting to Him that I am on equal ground and equal to Him. I am not. I needed a way to approach Him and gain access to Him. This is far to great a thing for any mortal man to attain. We have nothing to offer that is worthy of this. This is where Grace comes in. Accept the love i showed for you, accept the fact i love you just the way you are...and thats it. Its Gods choice to love us. That takes anything away from any man who tries to make a name for himself. That is essentially what religion is. Man saying I have God all figured out and I am His equal and because I am His equal I can look down my nose at you. This is why God hates religion. My natural Dad told me to do or not to do things because he knew what things would bring me harm in the end. God, to me, is no different. The reason I do or dont do things is because i know He knows best. Not because it makes me acceptable to Him. Any thoughts????
It seems you think no one went to heaven or hell (or had eternal life, to word it better) before the death of Christ on the cross. What makes you think that? But I agree with you mostly. I don't believe in god, but I can see that if there was god that created us must despise organized religion. If he even cares. He may be busy with other things, there is a lot of stuff besides us in the universe.
Hey, What did i mean by that? Interesting. I have read the bible and asked myself the same question. I wasnt trying to suggest that there was no heaven or hell before Christ. The bible doesnt really say a lot about the afterlife thought in the old testament. interesting question though... And yes,,..there are a lot of things in the universe besides us...but what if He made it all for His kids? Then He has nothing better to do than pursue us! I see a romance...i cant help it! Thanks for your boldness and honesty...its a good quality!
No one went to heaven or hell before Christians wrote it in apparently. Jews believe in reincarnation, and ultimate reunion with the divine. Kinda like Buddhists.
Really? How do you knw that. I dont know a lot about Judaism? So the jews, spekaing of the ones that killed Christ for herecy, didnt believe in heaven or hell? i have to read my bible more. this is intriguing to me. I am a big believer that Jesus brought something very foerign to this world in the way of grace. perhaps He not only re united us with the Father and made a way to be with Him again but also to one day dwell with Him as well? interesting....
No they dont believe in hell. Thats a christian invention. Hel is a German goddess of the dead, and that is where the word Hell came from.
heron is correct. as per the original post, i love it. my favourite concept of god is as the ecstatic lover, a romance like yours. as father/child, husband/wife, or any sort of connection, god and man are forever grasping after the other. "we must dare to say even this on behalf of the truth that the cause of all things himself, by his beautiful and good love for all things, through an overflowing of loving goodness, becomes outside of himself by his providential care for all beings and is as it were, charmed by goodness, affection, and love, and is led down from his place above all and transcendent of all to dwell in all things in accordance with his ecstatic superessential power which does not depart from itself..." (p.dionysius)
discussing the stories of gods in an atheist thread is like talking about barbeque at a PETA rally, it just doesnt fit. PETA dont believe in eating meat, atheists dont believe in god. Why discuss it from the stand point you took? Yes PETA talks about eating meat alot, but in antithesis, just like how a god would fare here.
oh pooh, you guys..... the op has only made 12 posts so far, let's cut some slack and pull those sticks a bit out of our bums. anyway, i'm an atheist and an agnostic, so i wanna come in here and talk about what my favourite stories are!! hahahahaha............ so there. bo diddley.
Could be... Or, it could be that there are no gods, which would explain the disinterest on his part in bringing us back to him....
Confused? You can't be both atheist and agnostic, it doesn't make any sence. Like being an atheist and hindu.
Of course, some would disagree: Can a person be both an atheist and an agnostic? A person can be an atheist and an agnostic (depending on the definition of god), or a theist (one who believes in a god or gods) and an agnostic. We can list four possibilities: Agnostic Theism: belief in a god without claiming to know for sure that the god exists. Gnostic Theism: belief in a god while being certain that this god exists. Agnostic Atheism: disbelief in gods without claiming to know for sure that none exist. Gnostic Atheism: disbelief in gods while being certain that none can or do exist.
Sorry I got to be that one to disagree. Agnostics say there is no proof either way......hence NO BELIEF EITHER WAY. I take it a step further because I don't even believe in physical proof or scientific reasoning that is based on objectivity or sensory input!
