    Cold Warrior

    Shouting toward the rapacious crowd
someone with a voice strong and loud
you’re on Death’s doorstep, come without delay
can’t stand the fear and pain, crucify me another day,

I see the world that you despise
the countless seeing through dead eyes
beneath the skin lies the answer
fear is etched on your Master,

Slip away to the beginning of time
    a pleasant dream of mine
what could have been but will never be
just the thought making me free,

Dark shadows come over me, turned the other way
what gives you the right to take me away
break these terrible chains holding me down
my feet are barely touching the ground,

Freedom sounds from the chorus of the dead
the warning unheeded, condemning us instead
lift me upwards away from this dreaded place
erase the memory of war without a trace,

Smoldering pyres of the burning dead
    pungent odor overpowering the rest
    the Unforgiven laugh without remorse
seeds of conflict their chosen life course,

From the bomb-pocked land, a hidden quagmire
my dying, restless soul cries out from afar
comfort me with your tears and prayers
and give the Warmongers what is rightfully Theirs,

Betrayal and lies spewing from their mouths
nothing can save them from this tortuous route
screams of fallen comrades fill my nightmares
their anguished faces telling me that I got to beware,

I’m forever dead, yet precariously alive
the wind carries memories of my life
a message of love that never remained the same
and out in the distance I hear them calling my name.

I wrote this poem after years of holding it in. I see the same things happening again in Iraq and someone has to speak up and tell it like it is. I'm glad that we have a forum where we can freely express ourselves. There are certain elements in our present federal government that wish to silence our voices. Protest is the purest form of being American and patriotic. I love my country and would not hesitate to give my life for it, but only if there is a clear and present danger. War is never the answer. There has to be a better way of reaching out to people and trying to understand where they are coming from.

    Peace,

    ALI
