Find out if they're registered anywhere. If they aren't, try to think of something really cool that they will use for a long time, not some ugly vase that they'll hide in their closet. But also not a toaster. :) My mom got her husband a subscription to the Easton Press catalog and she paid for like a five year subscription to the books, so every month they send him a catalog to pick the ones he wants and they send them to him, already paid for. I though that was a cool idea. People love books, or at least looking like they do. :)

You could take a bunch of pictures then give them in an album.

You can decorate the pages with little noted and flowers and neat stuff. Someone did that for me and I loved it.

Give them a tree, a cool one. Or a really big sack of weed, or a hooka. or all three, if she's a really good friend. .

I like to make small personalized gift baskets for wedding gifts. Find a really nice basket that the recipient will want to use again, line it with some nice soft fabric and weave some nice shiny ribbon along the handle or sides. Then find small items that are either universally useful or has some connection with the couple. For one gift i bought a small bottle of good wine and a beautiful carved wood handled corkscrew, a small colorful recipe book of italian gelatti (she was an ice-cream freak). Damn, i forget what else, but it was a lot of fun searching for stuff. There's lots of little items people use but tend not to get at weddings. Nice coaster sets, little books, etc. One of my friends was really into star wars and we got him some action figures. Not completely romantic but sure brought a smile, and other items made up the romantic part. This kind of gift is only fun when you really like the couple, otherwise it's just more work for you.:p
