I want to make a bag out of some tie dyed teeshirts or other cotton. I'm going to use a very old teeshirt that I dyed years ago for part of it. The dye on the shirt is pretty faded, and it wasn't very bold to begin with. I want the new fabric to match or at least be close to matching the old. Would it work if I diluted the dye with water or something to make it less vibrant? Is there some way to dull the dye? I dont really know a lot about tie dying, i've always just done the basics.

I don't really know if there's a way to dull dye, except maybe alot of washing, but that would really waste alot of water. The only other thing to do would be to bleach it, but that would make it very uneven and do alot more than just dull the dye.

Why not just pick a lighter shade of fabric?

i haven't done tye dye in a while, but i think if you just leave the stuff in the dye for less time than what is suggested you will get duller colors. i'm pretty sure that one time i was doing tye dye and got impatient and took it out and the colors were dulled. not sure but worth a shot though?!

    good luck!
