I can't ever find good winter coats that are inexpensive. Do you guys just layer alot, or do you actually have winter coats? Gimme some good brands and stuff... Thanks!
Like Lace said, thrift shops would be good. I wear a really good fleece pullover, a zip up sweatshirt, ans a really nice windbreaker from REI.... Keeps me really toasty. Of corse it doesn't usually get below zero here. Kate
you can usually get some coats at old navy for relatively cheap, and they have pretty cute basic like pea coat stuff, or check out h and m if there is one in your area, they have really cute stuff. also, not sure, but if there is a burlington coat factory anywhere near you, they always have tons of coats there for relatively inexpensive, and like everyone said you can always find fun coats at thrift stores and just have them dry cleaned...
i am CRAZY about layering!!! i am one of those really cold natured people, so i always have extra clothes with me! i really don't have a warm jacket, so i just use a big WOOL sweater with extra shirts underneath & scarf & hats you can always find those sweater-like coats at the thrift or sometimes you can find great vintage sweaters on eBay...just a thought stay warm, sweetie!
LOL~ You can get away with that because you are in Alabama. It doesn't stay that cold there. I like putting a coupla layers under a coat too though. I haven't bought a new coat in ages. Everything I get is Salvo (salvation army) or Goodwill.
i just bought my first winter coat off of ebay. i wanted a down filled coat b/c they keep you warm but i didnt want to support the industry (animal cruelty) so i found a used one on ebay for $30 (was $10 but the bid went up to $22 plus shipping) that is actually pretty cute. its orange and kind of vintage looking. im pretty sure the girl i bought it from got it from a thirft store...probably for like 5 bucks and then turned around and sold it to me for 30...but the thrift stores around here are terrible so im always on ebay looking for clothes. plus id rather buy second hand stuff anyway and recycle something that would otherwise be garbage.
the one i have right now sucks. i just got a new one at the goodwill, it still isnt quite what i want but its better. layering doesnt work too well here either, its a bit too cold for it.
I do a bit of both... for some reason, I don't get terribly cold in winter (I used to wear shorts year round), but lately I've worn a mexican pullover and 2-3 shirts (long sleeve/short sleeve combos). I also haev a decent windbreaker. But when it gets COLD I wear my down coat ($200 coat I got for $40 on sale!!!). When I hike and it's really cold (25 degrees or less) I wear long johns, 2 tees and my coat.... anything higher than that I wear 2 tees and my windbreaker.
I got an inexpensive thick corduroy coat from t.j.maxx, they have good stuff sometimes. Also, thermal underwear works excellent in very cold weather. And I know, being from wisconsin Fleece also keeps you very warm.
Ohhh courduroy.... I love courduroy, I'd love to have a courduroy coat! Is it warm!? Although, it doesn't get freezing here in Southern Illinois.... but sometimes it does. But even the slightest chill I hate... I hate hate HATE the cold.... yuck! Although, my sister has offered to give me her old Columbia coat. It's not really my style, but it looks something like this.... different color though, her's is a baby blue. But yeah, she says its SUPER warm.. which is a plus... but its not really my style. So we'll see, I guess! ::edit:: On the Columbia.com homepage, it says "We test on 'animals'". What the fuck? Why would they come right out and say that? Eh, doesn't make any sense to me....
I wear a wrap. It's not at all like a coat, but very warm. You take a piece of good fleece fabric that is long enough to cover you front and back as far down as you like. Mine goes to about my knees. Then you split the front half up the middle to the neckline. Then just hem the whole thing. I've worn the one I'm wearing now for about four years. I also have one for when it gets really really cold that is two layers of fleece sewn together. I even put a pocket on the inside of that one. It goes below my knees. It's for when it's f**king cold out. Kathi
oh wow, i didn't know they tested on animals. my mom bought me one of their coats, which i wear very seldomly (like if i'll be out for a long time sledding, etc). I don't really like the look of them either, they are very warm though. yeah the corduroy coat is pretty warm, better if i wear a scarf though. i love scarves
hey, i checked out the columbia thing because it didn't sound right, and if you click on where it says, we test on animals it takes you to this silly movie ad thing which shows humans testing out the coats granted its a pretty un pc thing to put on the website, but i think it was just a joke...
seriously! i agree 110% with lace and feet, Ross is fabulous, you can get some wild deals there, i rarely buy clothes anywhere else. if not ross, tj maxx or kohl's.. target has some cute plain jackets, i generally buy a cheap plain jacket and play it up a little bit with some patches or little embellishment action.. either way.. it doesn't get cold enough for coats in South Carolina, but when it does i have plenty of coats! lol good luck! look for bargains where ever you can find!
.....with that sig pic...I'm sure glad I have cable or else I'd probably still be waiting for the page to load.
well, better for them to be honest about it (novel idea for a corporation, eh?), so we (as consumers) can make educated decisions
I layer. I usually wear an undershirt, a long sleeve cotton shirt, a sweater, then my Army jacket I got at a thrift store a few years ago. It usually keeps me pretty warm, but I'm going dog sledding after the first of the year in the Upper Peninusula of Michigan and I'm going to need something MUCH warmer!
