I wanted to do this when I get better at making clothes but does it pay good enough to make a decent living? What are some good websites for info on this?

I buy a lot of skirts from this girl at apparelbycheryl.com. I don't know if that's her only income or whatever, but I'm sure she'd help you out if you contacted her. And ask her if I get a discount for referring you.... hehe.. J/k

My advice to you is to keep your job for a while~and see how it goes if you average enough to pay your bills for about nine months then go for it~I have been sewing for four and half years now~and I sell both at my family's store and online and on another mama's site~and it help's me pay the bills~but I would never want to depend only on that money alone~cause it's unpredictable one month I might do really well~the next one not so well~Like I said feel it out for a while and see how it goes~
Good luck with your new business~;)

*Definantly* keep your job when you try it out. I started my site on the side while I was in college, and then when I graduated last year I was able to do full time. I was living with my parents until the wedding, so that helped with the funds until it got rolling a little. The site is going pretty well now & still growing, but I know I would not be able to cover my living costs if I did not have my husband's salary too. And like redhotmama said sometimes the funds fluctate, so it is nice that he is on salary!

Basically it is really hard to know what people are going to like... I can put a dress on the site that I love & it will sit there for a bit while the other things sell. Quite a few times I have tried some new items like candles, hemp necklaces or whatever, and those things wouldn't sell either. So it is a really good idea to test it out first on the side to see #1 - if your things are going to sell & #2 - which things people want.

As for websites with information... I think most of the business sites I have seen are for starting up a business at a store... or an online business where you are just buying & selling things. I do not think there is that much out there to offer help & so a lot of times you just have to use a lot of common sense & trial & error. I'm always researching something online though, but a lot of times that might be related to search engines or advertising ideas or checking out some other sites for inspiration.

I get a lot of emails where people ask me about starting up a business so I wrote a bit about it on my Contact page (there is a Frequently Asked Questions section there)... I think I covered most of the same things on here, but just in case you might want to scan it.

    Best of luck!! [IMG]
