My boyfriend and I got a kitten on Thanksgiving. We named his Jazzmoe. and he was the cutest little seven week old kitten when we got him a little over a week ago. Now...he's a maniac. He wakes us up at 3 AM EVERY morning to play...like clockwork. He attacks our feet and faces...he pulls at our dreadlocks...he scratches at us (the two of us have plenty of war wounds)...and we're pretty much fed up with it. No amount of pushing him away from us helps...we've had to lock him in the bathroom at three AM the last few nights in order to get any sleep. Does anyone have any advice? He's a good cat and loves to play...but it's a little excessive... Also, at what age is it a good idea to neuter a male cat? I think this may help with the feistiness, as well...
Yeah, that's a young kitten who is well fed, warm, and cared for. Perhaps putting Jazzmoe up at night or blocking him from getting to your bedroom will give you all a break. He is at a stage of 'the-never-ending-rips'. He'll grow out of it soon (but not soon enough for your sanity). Just keep loving him and socializing him. Ask a vet about neutering
I guess we're just trying NOT to have to lock him up...I know I wouldn't want to be locked up...of course I'm also not trying to bite toes and noses... He's spoiled rotten...has plenty of toys and even an old 17-year-old cat to play with (although she's not taking a very good liking to him...too feisty for her, I think)...and I guess his spoiled-ness is showing...I guess we just can't help it...he's so darn cute!
We tried that last night and he sat on the other side of the barrier and cried...I'm not sure what is worse him attacking us or him crying. (I felt terrible!) My boyfriend has a one bedroom apartment in which he uses that one bedroom as a darkroom for his photography, so we sleep on a futon mattress on the floor in the living room...easy access for Jazzmoe.
yah, just make sure you know what you're squirting. Hitting a wall socket with a water stream is a real nasty way to wake up!:$ And soaked bed linens in winter doth not make a bed cozy.:&
doesn't sound like it would work, but i had to cuttle with my cat all nite, til it got to bad, and then didn't have an option other then having him neutered!
Did it help to have him neutered? Our kitten is only about eight weeks old...and I talked to a lady at a pet supply store and she said usually vets wait until they are six months old because all the "parts" are still developing. How old was your cat before he was neutered?
My cat was the same way.. playplayplayplayplay!!! He calmed down some with age.. its just a stage. You could put a piece of wood across the doorway... high enough that his kitten-self can't jump over, but he still would have the run of the apartment! Getting him neutered did help.. totally calmed him down. He still is very active, and still loves to play, but also loves a good "mamma cuddle". My vet told me that six months is about right...right before they have that first "special moment" is ideal.
it *may* help if you do alot of playing with him right before bed. that way he will tire out some and atleast sleep a little more thru the night. you could go so far as to adopt another kitten his age that way he will have a playmate and wont bother you so much........
I've never had a cat that DIDN'T do that sort of thing as a kitten...kittens are the cutest, most aggravating creatures on earth, I think!! All of my cats also grew out of that stage...neutering does help, but he is prob. too young to have it done...6 months is what I've always done with my cats. Ask a vet though, maybe he/she will have other ideas...it just may be a matter of time before kitty settles down...you may want to get suggestions from your vet about that too...good luck!
