...it's a nightmare isn't it? You're talking to someone and suddenly more people pop up and you're in the middle of a three-way. You don't want to be impolite to anyone so you end up juggling windows. Or you write to someone and they're not very talkative - having an in depth discussion with someone else, no doubt, so what do you do? Try to make idle chit chat or make an excuse to leave?

And saying goodbye, you say "bye" and they write something back, which you have to acknowledge. It can go on for years!

I have people on my list I've never talked to .. am I supposed to say hi? What should I say? Why did I add so many complete strangers last night? Was I drunk? Ah, yes. Sorry about that.

    Minefield. Any tips?

Have 2 e-mail addresses. One for the people you always want to talk to and one for everyone.

Or block everyone on you're contact list and only unblock the people you want to speak to

Or have the '(away)' on so that no one talks to you (and you have an excuse to not write back if they do) and then you can just talk to the people you want to.

In the little signature bit say something that will scare people away...I do...I usually have "Wearing only Spectacles"....or "This better be good coz boy am I angry"...something like that. Then only those who really want to speak to you will force the issue.

Hmm, that does seem a little cold hearted! I'm just very paranoid ever since I learned that Luchi has a "boring" list ... since reading that I've been trying to be extremely entertaining on msn ... juggling, singing songs, giving out free money ...

It's not a place for insecure people is it?!

I should make it clear that I don't want actually to scare people away ... it's just an awkward situation. Someone please speak to me! :(

I hardly ever use it anymore. It gets too much having to answer more than 2 people.

What I really hate is when a complete stranger tries to add me and I don't know who the hell it is.

I'd rather chat to someone on the phone.

    i can juggle about 6-8 :)

if you find scary people on your msn thing, just delete them if you don't know them, or put them into different categorys.

and be cunning!!! your quite a cunning fox, though nothing compared to moi ;)

I always put my status thing as Away or Offline, and then if I see someone I want to talk to, I come on. I'm not a big chatter, though. Emails are cool. But instant messaging bugs me.

with the whole bye thing- sign out before they can reply to the bye.

or just keep going though the windows saying bye then hit sign out then see what the replys were!!

    hehehe.

im so rude when leaving, i leave it to the last possible moment in a tough convo and then announce im leaving..

but i usully dont talk to people i dont really know these days unless they stimulate conversation. im not a chatty person so unless ive spoken to them before and have something to talk about im ok...

im sick of people adding me and we have one conversation, 'hello, how are you, what music do you like, what do you do, whats your fav colour etc' then never speaking again.

i actually went though my old address the other night and deleted all the people ive never talked to and the people who i have had one convo with and all the addresses people dont use anymore that are there to look pretty and boost my contacts.. now i might start using it again.

It's awkward when you have someone on your list that you struggle to find things in common with and basically never talk to them because of it... but unless you did that and tried, how would you have known it wasn't your soulmate? Conversely it's a lovely surprise when you get on well with someone you wouldn't have expected to.

I'm quite surprised at the level of hostility towards trying to get to know new people ... being quite shy in real life I like the way you can get to know a person's mind through instant messaging without all the extraneous self-consciousness and self-doubt getting in the way... at least, it didn't used to get in the way until I read responses to this thread about other people's attitude towards people they don't know! :(

Anyway, apologies in advance to the twenty or so random people I added last night in a fit of drunken boredom!:&

humph, i have some people i rarely talk to on there :( i actualy put people i talk to alot in my friends category, and then the rest in co-workers, so i don't have to sift through them :&

i don't really look for things in common, i just ramble on or sit there listening to peoples rambles, it gives me much joy :) saying bye is something i hate, but i try to make it personal, unless i have to rush off then it's the good old copy/paste job!!!

Oh man my girlfriends given you a complex! :D :p
haha, no don't worry man! i don't think anyone else has a boring list on msn, i think thats just a luchi thing...:p
I block people that actually annoy me, it doesn't hurt anyone, and they don't know that you've blocked them. try just deleting their email address. hmmm.
    :D haha, life is funny.

I normally go through and delet people i don't talk to any more, then if they talk to me i re-add them, but i they don't then there is no loss because its obveously not important that we stay incontact. However there are people i don't talk to who still remina on my list because i'd rather not loss contact with 'em!

As for blokcing people its harmless, no one will know. Although, if you really don't want to talk to them why have them on your list to begin with?

Boring list... ooh you little devil Luchi! I am sure i am on it :p i am not the most converstation lady on msn it must be said! I rarely have more than one or two converstations at a time. Msn is sterial and impersonal as it is, to then add to it by having 10 conversations at once would make it even worse, how can you have a good conversation if your talking to everyone all at once!? Or maybe Dandy just can't juggle more than two or three conversations at once.. i end up typing in the wrong boxes and when that happens you know i have more than three conversations going and i can't keep it up!

He hehe... msn is good, but give me a phone call or a chat person any day.. even a letter is better than msn sometimes because you can say all that needs to be said without anyone interupting :p and there is the added bonus of sending random things you find in your roooom!!

msn is a funny ol thing, with all these silly unwriten rules and codes of conduct etck. to be honest i think its great. and its great everyone fits into this little way it works, playing by the same rules and all.

i guess im a fan because the telephone scares me. i cannee use the phone you see, unless its a quick 'time and place?' kinda deal. msn is a nice alternative. i think the fact that it is sterile and unpersonal is what is so appealing.

as for blcking people, sure it is useful and harmelss, but i find myself feeling really guilty about it, and unblocking them within half an hour or so.

well.. thats my way of working anyway...

    oh well such is life
