That was an extremely interesting article. I have to admit I'd written Lewis off as a religious nut a long time ago, due mostly to the fact that th only exposure I'd had to his writtings up til now was either via the selective editing of the christian apologists or the out of hand dismissal of his ideas by the diehard atheists (for that matter I'd pretty much decided not to go see Narnia because I figured it would just turn out to be alot of pro-christian brainwashing). Looks like I had him all wrong. I particularly liked this; Lewis claimed that followers of pagan religions can be saved without personal faith in Jesus Christ: “There are people in other religions who are being led by God's secret influence to concentrate on those parts of their religion which are in agreement with Christianity, and who thus belong to Christ without knowing it ... For example a Buddhist of good will may be led to concentrate more and more on the Buddhist teaching about mercy and to leave in the background (though he might still say he believed) the Buddhist teaching on certain points. Many of the good Pagans long before Christ's birth may have been in this position” (C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity, pp. 176-177). It's pretty much a paraphrase of what Justin Martyre said when he stated "anyone living by reason is a christian though he'd been considerred an athiest". thanks for the article.
