I just graduated high school in June and I took a break from collage cause I dont know what I want to do.... What are some good fields that I can go into that cover the hippie lifestyle? something that I really care about.
Why don't you think about what is important to you, instead of worrying what "hippies" think fits "the hippie lifestyle"? Are you into conservation issues? Some "hippies" are all about saving the environment, but if you don't enjoy biology that's a bad field for you to go into. Are you into politics? You could look at being a lobbyist, fighting for whatever issues you care about. Some hippies are totally into changing the government that way, while other hippies refuse to even vote... I mean, who even has the authority to say what fits "the hippie lifestyle"? I would highly suggest spending this year exploring your interests. You know, all those things you've always wondered about -- go down to the public library and check out some books to see if the work that goes into answering your questions is the kind of thing you would like to do. Anything anyone tells you on here, based on your question above, will say more about what they enjoy than about what YOU should be doing. What are you interested in? If you give us that, people might be able to suggest something you can do with those interests. What is it that you really care about?
I agree--get out there and try some stuff, explore, research, talk to people about what you are interested in! Don't be afraid to try something because you might not like it...you'll never know until you try!
Do you mean you want to learn about hippies? Then I'd major in American History and with a concentration on postwar America. That covers a lot more than just hippies, but they're covered. That's the best I can help you with. But you just mean you want to major in something that hippies like... don't just major in something because you think it's part of being a hippie. Major in something because you really love it. College (and life) is hard enough without the added stress of you doing things because you think you should, and not because it's something you love. What do you love? There's a major in just about everything.
One of my friends takes a course in World Development, not sure if American universities do the equivalent or not but she's taking it because she wants to try and make a difference (although in all fairness I think she's finding it a bit depressing).
If you want to get to the bottom of what a "hippie" was back in the 60's...realize this: the stereotypical hippie in the 60's didn't go to college, they didn't want to change the system. They didn't care about politics or what was going on the world. THAT definition is ACTUALLY what a "yippie" is...they want a CHANGE...and they work for that change. Hippies still exists...yippies are few and far between. But that's only if you want to look at the TECHNICAL side of things.
What's a "concentration"? I'm new to this whole college thing, as well as all these new terms relating to it.
Well, what is your suggestion for him then... College sucks...we all know that...but what do you suggest for him. If you're going to post here...post something intelligent... To Midget: Concentration is basically a minor... For instance, my major is environmental studies, but my concentration is political science. This basically means that I'm incorporating political science in environmental studies...It's what your focus is on within your major. Does that make sense? PM if you have questions.
Easy, don't do collage. My dad never went to collage, and he made enough monny to have a house that's paid off and everything. The love of monny is the root of all evil.
Maybe so...but your father's times are a little different then OUR times. It's not as simple as going out and finding a factory job anymore. Unless you have a bachelor's degree...you can't even get a job in a factory anymore. My mom word for Ford Motor Company for 20 years...now, they are phasing out her jobs (she no longer works there) for robots and people who know how to work on these machines. It's not easy to make a living without a college degree...MONEY (just thought I'd let you know how to spell that) IS the root of all evil...but the reality of it is...you do need SOME to survive. What are you two's grandois plans for your future? I'm a little more schooled than the two of you...for the OP...who are you going to listen to? Two teenage deuchebags or someone who's lived in the world? Give me a break buddy.
Lots of people go to school just to study a subject in which they are interestd. Just because they are in school doesn't mean they will be able to use that knowledge to make a lot of money in the end. Some people never even get jobs relating to their degrees. In todays world, it's more important you have a degree...you will be hired over someone who doesn't. Leraning a trade is also good, too. I will not knock that option in the least.
i think lobbying would be a good idea...basically fighting fora cause...anything science involving nature would be right up your alley(that is if you enjoy science but a warning, you'll have tons of labs mine are 2 hours and 45 minutes and they are generally pretty boring unless your really a science buff), maybe philosophy but i dont know if that'll lead to a job, archeaology, maybe a foreign language (i think its pretty hip learning about other peoples, their language customs, etc.), i think meeting as many interesting people around the world is a pretty hippie concept ( i mean embracing and seeing all their is)...im double majoring in geology and spanish, not exactly sure what im gonna due after college...but i figure i'll be able to use em both, a.) because we're constantly fucking up the earth, land development, etc. and natural disasters (geological factors are good predictors of disasters), i would of done envir. science but chem. is a requirement and im awful at chem. and B.) over half the u.s. population speaks spanish and its gonna grow so i figure, be a translator or go to spain or other spanish speaking countries and try and work their...sorry for the rambling...most important keep your options open and try diff. things...my school made me take a lot of different classes in diff. majors my first 2 semesters to help give me ideas of what i wanted to focus on, oh and some schools let you create your own major with the classes that they offer, so maybe thats an option, my friends did this one made a major that was a mix of middle eastern studies and political science(he just got back from egypt) and the other did international affairs and spanish(she just got back from spain, absolutely loved it)...once again apologies for the length, hope i helped
I won't make much money doing the job I want to do. I want to learn as much as I can about the environment. I want to exchange ideas with others with like-minds and be challenged by these ideas. I want to do some lobbying work and chances are, without a degree, there's no way anyone would want me to lobby for them. I am going to school to better my chances of getting a job that has the potential to change the world. In this day an age...good luck trying to find ANY worthwhile job without a college education.
Misguided? No. Absolutely not. Cooloner, I don't know what your problem with me is exactly...first you call me insecure in a thread (which...you never explained), and now you think I'm misguided. I'm beginning to think you think you're a know-it-all What I mean by worthwhile, is something that is going to make a positive difference in the world. I don't want to own a business that produce toxic chemicals...because that is more damaging to the environment and to humankind, than say a special needs instructor. That's what I mean.
I just would like you to explain why you think I'm insecure. I've never had anyone tell me that, so it made me curious. And, no, I don't think you made your points clearly. I think you need to learn how to explain yourself a bit better and be more concise. Maybe you should go back to school and take some English classes.
