I've never planted them either, and would love to hear some personnal stories in the experience. Have planted garlic. Oh and a side note...Tomatillos....oh man oh man....if you like mexican food...try these...
Shallots (Allium cepa Aggregatum) are a type multiplying onion. They are easy to grow but expensive to buy - so I love them. You can use (or sell) the young stems for french cooking or the bulbs. The stems quickly grow back and harvesting them actually increases bulb production. The bulbs are like a mild flavored garlic. Like any onion, they need good drainage and have the same pests. They don't like a very acid soil and they don't like fertilizer. They send down long (8 to 10 inch) feeder roots, so "double dig" the beds. They don't put out lateral roots, so you can space them 2 or 3 inchs apart. Each clove will produce 4 to 8 more cloves. Through the year I pull them up as needed (using them like green onions too), then - around here - in late February (after starting tomatoes, peppers and basil in flats), I pull them all up and re-plant the biggest cloves. I use only wide row planting (4 foot wide), I plant the cloves about an inch deep, barely covering the top of the clove, I put them in a grid about 2 1/2 inchs apart. They've got 6 feet of wide row at about 72 plants per foot. Then I do the chives(they're next to the shallots). It takes a couple hours, but then they're good to go for another year. Hope that helped. Peace, poor_old_dad ps.: Tomatillos....oh man oh man....if you like mexican food...try these... - AMEN. They are easy to grow, produce a lot, and they sell very, VERY, VERY well. - POD
