What is it about Kansas? Some 'christians' from Kansas say God hates fags, others want to mandate that intelligent design is taught in lieu of the theory of evolution. Now a high school principal has suspended a student for speaking Spanish.

His father's native language is Spanish and the boy wants to continue to be fluent in his father's tongue - admirable, from my viewpoint. A classmate, knowing the boy speaks Spanish (as well as English), asks if he can borrow a dollar - in Spanish. The boy responds "no problema". A teacher overhears this exchange and sends the boy (but not the one who asked the question - in Spanish) to the principal's office where he gets suspended. Click this.

Does the principal also have trouble with those speaking French? German? Does she break into hives when she passes a Latin classroom? This is an EDUCATOR???

I understand and support the premise that if you come and live in a country, you should learn to read, write, and speak in the native tongue as soon as you can. And I can understand if this boy spoke only Spanish and was making no attempt to learn English, but the boy is also fluent in English.

So, what's up, Kansas? Is it the water?

~self-preservation note: I fully realize that not all the people who live in Kansas support this or the other craziness currently under way in that state. To them I say sorry if this rose your hackles - I wasn't aiming at you.

While I don't doubt the ridiculousness of christians sometimes, or principals for that matter, I can't help but wonder if there is more to this story.......

I think it has something to do with the fact that kansas is really a whole lotta of nothing with a cow every few miles.

"LAWRENCE, Kan. -- The Douglas County Sheriff's Department on Tuesday was investigating a case in which a professor whose planned course on creationism and intelligent design was canceled after he derided Christian conservatives said he was the victim of a roadside beating.

He did tell the Lawrence Journal-World for a story Tuesday that two men who beat him were making references to the class that was to be offered for the first time this spring. Originally called "Special Topics in Religion: Intelligent Design, Creationism and other Religious Mythologies," the course was canceled last week at Mirecki's request.

A recent e-mail from Mirecki to members of a student organization referred to religious conservatives as "fundies" and said a course describing intelligent design as mythology would be a "nice slap in their big fat face." Mirecki has apologized for those comments.

"I just pulled over hoping they would pass, and then they pulled up real close behind," he said. "They got out, and I made the mistake of getting out."

He said the men beat him on the head, shoulders and back with their fists, and possibly a metal object.
