I heard that most people in Amsterdam speak English quite well and a fair few speak French and German too (but I think English is the dominant foreign language)

I was in Amsterdam 5 years ago..it was gr8..and they do mostly speak English quite well.. actually now that i think of it, i don't remember even one person not knowing to give me directions in english when i asked them how to get somewhere..
i don't think things could have changed too much in these 5 years..

99,95% of the people that aren't over 65 speak english well enough to talk to.
German is spoking a 'bit', a slĂght bit. Same goes for frensh. Other languages only happen to a few people.
But speaking dutch or english you're fine in amsterdam.
Although most amsterdam people don't like tourists, so speaking dutch is still best^^

Yes, you would be understood by the majority of people if you would speak German in Amsterdam. However, in general we (the Dutch) do not like to speak German. WWII etc. Mentioning '88 is always a huge success though.

    Love, bird.

Yes you would get away with it if you speak poor german. All words differ a little from each other, but are quite familiar

Fedor must be from some border village or something in the neighbourhood of Germany.
In Amsterdam almost nobody speaks German or understand it.

In my experience, the Dutch hate speaking German. Some who I came across while I worked there didn't like to speak English even. Thats why I learnt to speak Dutch weetje, niet zo moeilijk joh, gewoon proberen.
