Is it globalization or westanization?

Discussion in 'Globalization' started by freesmile, Dec 8, 2005.

  1. Thankyou for completely discrediting and removing all dignity from my theories, which are shared by educated people around the world in response to the crisis we currently face due to globablisation, greed and ignorance among other things. Western society is NOT the best society, i am afraid and I hate it and will spend my life trying not to persuade people like you but instead finding better ways to live for myself. 19th century thinking? you're the most imperialistic thinker here!

Let me just say about western society once again; a culture in which there are terribly rich and terribly poor people doesn't work. You can take your comfortable thinking, fatty foods and cancer cures (note: irony) and enjoy as much as you like, im finished arguing

also you completely missed the sentence where I said, "I'm not saying we should all revert back to being hunter gatherers"

i think much of it is westernization, for many decades america has been a hugh influence on other countries in the world, too much sometimes. but now i believe that america isn't the super power it once was, other countries are seeing us through reality instead of rose colored glasses. pres. bush has destroyed our foreign policy, and when the world watched the atrosties at new orleans and other cities destroyed by katrina, the world's eyes are now open to america's failings. i hope there will be more world globilization now.

Remember that outsourcing is a relatively new phenomenom. Supermarkets predate them. Who decides what is ethical? Communists will say that any division of labor is unethical. Do you mean child labor? sure i'd agree with that. There are statutes preventing that i believe. Sweatshops? They're illegal in this country. Overseas? Well if China only mandates that minimum wage is like 80 bucks a month, what can we do? Demand our companies pay them the US/Uk minimum wage?

ethical is relative, but do YOU believe it okay that supermarkets will get their products from the developing world, flying their produce at a small cost. sweatshops happen. ermm and actually in china these corps break the rules, and they should pay their employees a standard wage that is in relation to what we are paid to their economy, not much much less, have you read the report on nike recently published?

I dont believe supermarkets get all their food from unethical places.

i couldn't speak for all supermarkets in the US, but i know Walmart, who own Asda here in the UK is extremely unethical, the majority do because of profit, and rarely do you see fair trade items available, on as many items as possible or from the local area.

As for locally? Where do you suggest supermarkets in New York City or London buy their produce from? Central park?

erm doesn't new york have any farm land on the edge of the city? i know there are not many places that are far from the countryside, local doesn't mean in the exact place, it can mean as long as it does not have to be flown in which causes more environmental problems.

Sure, have any great sources for me to read on this?

actual it will do damage in the long run, economies and their own local company struggle to be created. look at the culture of nepal at present, many of their citizens feel let down because of how american shops are opening so clearly, i would advise you to read 'With Tibet With Love' by Isabel Losada.

You still havent shown how a corporation can force itself on someone. I MIGHT buy a supermarket, but with nike? C'mon! Nike isnt going to put out the local cobbler. These shoes get shipped overseas for a huge profit. In many places, Nikes/Jeans etc are products that the poor kids aspire to owning..

aspire to... do you believe this is good, that advertising and celebrities are forcing 'cool' onto impressionable kids. actual nike shops can destroy other sports shops, a huge nike village opened in my own city, and many shops did close because of competition and so called 'cool' clothes.

I dont speak things like Cambodian or Hindi etc, so no i dont go around and talk to your average person. Most people i tal to overseas in poor countries go on about Hollywood movies or the New York Yankees etc..Most of them dont have anything bad to say. I spend most of the time in the cities and not out in the rural villages, so it is the big western corporations that WILL help them.

haha, please tell me you are kidding me, western corps will help, ahve you actually been to the developing world and said this. the people of the developing world have great knowledge of international relations, and know what will help them, and i doubt you will find many who agree with you. who did you speak to? and in what country was this? because it seems bizaare, was it a westernized state?

bhopal incidient? The chemical disaster 21 years ago? Or is there something new?

no the recent incident, when they have decided to let there borders open that has been making the news here. in the past they kept their culture by only letting so many tourists in at a high cost. but over recent months, american tv and gaming has changed so much. the BBC did as special report on this, on how, when in the past, the children were taught to be peaceful and loving but recently been playing shooting games on the internet. and all the locals are pretty mad to the effect it is having on the children. so they are now materislistic children and their culture is dissapearing.... but thats good right :(

Again, you believe everything to be unethical. I dont agree. Prove that they do. I can give you the name of my local supermarkets and if you want to show me how they are unethical, i might stop buying from them.. ok?

    See above.

No, and if there is a little no nearly enough to feed 8 million people. So can we boat it in from china *grins*

You use very loaded terms like "many." How many is many? Is it 5 people? is it 51% of the country? please be more specific..

    And thanks for the book.

Who says nike isnt cool? I dont see whats wrong with the advertising. I personally dont buy from nike, i guess i'm not that impressionable.

wtf? seriously, you make it sound like everyone in the non western world dreads the west corporations. Please, provide some statistics that everyone hates the western corporations. Many sure gladly work for them to earn money.

and what do you want? a transcript of conversations? I've been to most southeast asian/far east countries.

I've searched for bhopal on cnn/reuters/bbc and all i've gotten are articles on the chemical accident. Forgive me for being out of the loop.

Educated people say many things. Just because they're educated doesn't make them right.

19th century? With your romantic ideals of the American Indians. Yes, you are 19th century. Wake up to reality. Dont deny them their dignity and livelihood.

Just remember..we progressed past your way of living. Evolved if you will.

Maybe you should do without everything that western society affords you and then get back to me.

You offer no alternative other than that the great way of life was destroyed by the present. So surely i am to conclude that you think those societies are better?

computers well keep a eye on you until you die "thank god they were not in pratical use when i grew up"

  8. You still don't get it

  9. You still have not thought about anything anyone else is saying, nor have you refrained from being insulting and arrogant. I feel silly for coming back one last time

Once again, and its sad I have to repeat myself, I am not saying we should revert back to hunter gathering. It would not work and like you say it would be quite shitty. Nor am I saying we should do without our current luxuries or technology. I am saying a majority of people are without choice or spiritual/social fulfilment and we need a society or societies (please note there is never just ONE good way) that addresses these things, and I don't believe the current trend in our culture is pointing towards the necessary changes.

I found your remarks about 'civilization' and 'native americans' to be completely insulting.

so basically you want western society + some idealized version of the aborigines/american indian society that in ALL likelyhood never existed.

We are without choice of where we live? How will this EVER change without the complete and utter destruction of borders/government/laws?

As for social/spiritual fullfilment? I would agree on the spiritual fulfillment part. I see the advancement of the west coming at the expense of spirituality. Still, i know of no better society than western society. Can it be improved? hell yeah, and it is through western ideals and beliefs that we question ourselves and TRY to improve. This is why i believe western society is superior. We search out the best way of living and try to attain it..

  11. If my remarks on american indians were insulting, I apologise. However, I was not attempting to insult you intentionally nor anybody else and you know this.
