if you carry hard drugs into countries that impose harsh penalties then you take the risk.

guy - really??? i did not know that! thanks for the head's up mate! the fact that nguyen is dead now didn't at all tell me that there was a risk involved... neither did the fact that the media kept on reminding us off his hanging date before he was hung... so cheers man! he wasn't taking the drug to singapore by the way...

igothung - you suck, and your first post is a shite one. but do please have a good life arsehole.

tip of the day: don't be a jealous of a dead man.

Timeline: The life of Van Nguyen
    1980
August 17: Van Tuong Nguyen and his twin brother Khoa are born in a refugee camp in Thailand. The family moves to Australia.
    2002
December 12: Nguyen is arrested while transiting through Singapore's Changi Airport en route from Cambodia to Melbourne.
He is found to be carrying 396.2 grams of heroin.

this from abc onlinecheck it out yourself

or you could check out this:
Van Nguyen, the death penalty and Singapore
Melbourne man, Van Tuong Nguyen, was hanged in Singapore on 2 December 2005. He was 25 years old.
In 2002 Van Nguyen was arrested at Changi airport, in transit from Cambodia to Melbourne, for importing 396.2g of heroin into Singapore. He was convicted in 2003 and was sentenced to death. www.nswccl.org.au/issues/death_penalty/nguyen.php

he was carrying (i said "carry") a hard drug into a country that has decided to hang drug smugglers, they don't care whether you are ultimately going to melbourne or timbuctu. this could devolve into some slanging match but if you must quote me at least do me the favour of reading what i've written.

i do not favour the death penalty myself but singapore is a sovereign state and its laws have to be respected by travellers, when in rome do as the romans do.

that's right, but the transit area isn't legitamately singapore.. and singapore was never his desired destination. if he didn't get stopped at transit, he would have just hopped onto the plane, and flown the hell away from that dehumanizing country.

so far you've said nothing useful about this matter guy. all you've said is the same common sense stuff that we've all heard a million times... i.e. all laws have to be respected, even if they're retarded and nonsensical. you haven't mentioned the deep relationship between burma (the world's largest heroin supplier) and singapore; you haven't mentioned that the media lied about the amount of doses nguyen had; you haven't mentioned that prohibition doesn't solve the drug problem; and you haven't mentioned that the death penalty doesn't deter drug use! my problem with you is that you didn't even critisize igothug's post. all you did was hop onto the anti-drug bandwagon or something.

hi spiral i'm doing some research on your previous statements i'll get back to you when i've got all the info. have emailed the singapore embassy but no dice, so i'll ring them up and ask them about their sovereignty over the transit lounge.

america is allowed to smuggle drugs and cause untold misery and suffering because it has the most powerful military in the world, it can do anything, it will never be held accountable. torture, rape, war crimes etc. van didn't have that kind of might behind him thats why he died. knowing this, your average joe doesn't try to play this game.

WTF? Why is America even being mentioned in this thread?

The guy is a drug trafficker. He is a retard. Lets not martyr the guy.

  10. true, but did he deserve the death penalty, I think as an advocater of the west megara, you would argue no.

Well, i have no moral objections to the death penalty.

I dont, however, think this is a case meriting it. At least we know he did it and its not an innocent person, though.

i don't think that selling one small bag of heroin is enough for someone to call you a "drug trafficker". a drug trafficker is someone that has made an occupation out of selling drugs; which isn't (the dead retard) nguyen. and america is mentioned in this thread to show even more mass hypocrisy. if you are so against drug traffickers, than you should be against the governments of america, burma, and singapore.

He had more than 25x the amount needed to trigger the auotmatic death penalty laws.. He had around 1 pound of heroin..hardly a trifle amount. A drug trafficker is someone who brings drugs from one place to another. Was he not got doing exactly this?

Heck, 47%(to 46%) of Australians believe that the guy should be executed. He violated another country's laws. This isnt an unjust law. He was trafficking drugs. He wasnt executed for speaking out against a regime. I cant defend his actions.

we're not talking about America, burma, or singapore.

  15. WTF? Can you tell me where you got those 47% figures, I think any Australian here would find that highly improbable seeing as we hear polls like that all the time, last I heard it was something like 80% thought the death penalty was unjust.

However, I only just noticed the title of the thread. Australians have a weird habit of idolising everyone that happens to commit a crime overseas, I couldn't even watch TV without wanting to puke around the time Chapelle Corby was the flavour of the month.

Megara, I don't know how you can say capital punishment is justifiable. Just my opinion

A survey by Morgan Poll released on 30 November 2005 showed 47 % of Australians believed Nguyen should be executed, 46 % said the death penalty should not be carried out, and 7 % were undecided. [2]

    from:

I believe Society has the right to kill. Otherwise, how can we believe countries have the right to go to war? Self defense doesn't cover all the bases.

Whether we SHOULD is another question. As i said, my problem is whether we can be 100% sure that an innocent person isnt being killed. Also, i dont like the carnival like atmosphere that executions take on. I think that is sick.

  17. Interesting theory, I'll have to think about that one.

Megara - from my own mind (not that of any media people), i see that a drug trafficker is someone that traffics drugs for an OCCUPATION. and i also see that the average drug trafficker is someone who is more experienced and focused in drug trafficking than nguyen ever was...

IT IS an unjustifiable law. why is it unjustifiable? how about because it has been proven that capital punishment doesn't stop people from selling drugs (or doing other crimes), and that THERE IS NO LOVE IN FEAR?

polls are complete bullshit half of the time by the way. that one you're talking about could have consisted of 80% skinheads. and yes, we aren't talking about the governments of america and burma etc, but we should be! once their history of hard drug dealing is brought up, a tsunami of hypocrisy will arise before your very eyes. and even if you close your eyes for the rest of your life, the hypocrisy is always going to be there.

Lying in a field - pretty twisted hey.

  19. Yes, yes it is, but i would give up trying to argue with megara, i'd rather have sex with a tree.
