Song story lyrics... as in a song that tells a story? Well that one's easy!

The Who - "A Quick One, While He's Away" (1966)

It's a ten minute song about a girl who'se husband (or boyfriend) has gone away for something (doesn't say what reason) and she has become, how should we say, lonely. Her friends decide to cheer her up by hooking her up with an old engine driver named Ivor. He seduces her and they end up sleeping together. Then, unexpectedly, the husband comes home. The girl confesses to sleeping with Ivor and in the end is ultimately forgiven by her husband.

It's one of my favorite recordings and most definitely one of the greatest "story songs" (or as Pete Townshend calls it: "A mini opera").

 

Almost all song lyrics by Dylan are awesome. Mr. Tambourine Man, All Along the Watchtower, Like A Rolling Stone, House of the Rising Sun, and so on.

Blind Guardian, my favorite metal band, has a lot of great storytelling songs. Their most popular is The Bard's Song (In the Forest) well, it's not that much of an ongoing story type, but it is a good song at that. They have a whole concept album based on J.R.R. Tolkien's The Silmarillion called Nightfall in Middle-Earth complete with little narration parts and everything. If you're into Iron Maiden, Queen, Metallica, Scorpions, Queensryche, etc. check 'em out.
