About ten years ago I cut plastic grocery bags into long strips, tied them together, and crocheted a grocery bag-sized grocery bag out of them. It was really strong and it worked great. I think my mother-in-law threw it out. I should make another one.

Thanks.Cut bags into strips, make chain weave on floor loom and hand sew. The loom is the key here.

Ah! I was wondering how you got it so tight. What sort of loom do you use?
