I am strongly against the war...and strongly against most of what Bush does...but I have been thinking lately of maybe joining the armed forces, and voicing my opinion towards everything, and try and do what I can to make things better. As little of a feat as that might be, and not in anyway easily attainable, but just a thought. Any help or opinions would be awesome! Peace & Love!
I support the Military only beacuse of World War II. That war was for a reason and that reason should be followed. Stupid Veitnam, pointless.
first of all, you wont be able to do a damn thing from within the military.. you'll get in & quickly realize if u voice your opinion you'll be doing so from behind bars or a hospitol bed the military robs you of individuality, & demands absolute conformity, of dress action & thought your trained to follow orders blindly & not think for yourself join the military to protest war? yea sure, & get stuck on the most dangerouse duty, & end up dead..good solution
I support the military for national defense. At this time we are in a war based on lies that is leading to unnecessary deaths of young guys. Young men should be dissuaded from joining the military and thus becoming a part of the body count. More people need to be actively opposed to this war, and it shouldn't take a draft to galvanize the masses.
Why must you join the military to voice your opinion? And do you honestly think that they would care what your opinion is? *no offense, just trying to get you to think more about what you're considering*
By joining the military, you will be agreeing to join whichever branch, support and defend the constitution, obey orders, etc. You will be offering yourself to kill or be killed for our country. If you are going into the military for other reasons, you should think long and hard. Unless you plan on encouraging mutiny, I can think of no message that you can give from within the military better than from without. I am not saying that soldiers should not protest or comment on current policy. I am saying that joining the military as a soapbox from which to excersize your freedom of speach is foolish.
As numerous posts have stated, if you're against the war and strongly against what the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces does, joining is exactly the wrong thing to do. If you're thinking of joining to gain a different perspective before you voice your opinions, that's not quite as exactly wrong, but there are many, less violent and sometimes safer options, such as correspondent study. If you just want to make things better, that's commendable, that's what most of us do, but often we find it impossible. The Armed Forces are not bad in themselves, many countrymen have benefited from military experience, you may be one of them. I stand dilligently behind every troop out there fighting, because they're not fighting another useless war, they're fighting for you and me. If you join, be sure you do it for the right reason, being that you whole-heartedly believe it's the right choice for you because you want to defend your country and rights. If you're against the war, or disagree with the president's actions, as a lot of us do, your duty should be to your congressional representatives, not your drill seargent.
I voiced my opinion whilst in the Armed Forces. I supported Bill Clinton and his plan to decriminalize homosexuality in the military. I have a brother who is gay and really wanted to serve but would not lie about his sexuality. I found myself bounced out on my freckled ass with only the clothes on my back. Soaringeagle is 100% correct. You have no individuality. They spend your first 6-12 weeks tearing you down as an individual so that you may become something bigger to them; a cog in a machine, a part of a team. And you never really get that back.
