I wouldn't go that far. What had happened was that the hippies increasingly attracted the attention of the media, which gave the public a superficial image that attracted thugs and loafers. As the late '60s kicked in swarms of undesirables flooded into San Francisco, bringing with them drugs such as cocaine, meth and heroin. As crime rose and the atmosphere disintegrated into chaos, the idealists began to flee to seek more peaceful settings.

Movies exist to entertain people, they shouldn't be viewed as an accurate depiction of reality. Period. Even documentaries can be skewed.

I personally would like to see more movies made about the psychedelic experience (to the tune of Fear and Loathing, somewhat). Maybe I'll work on that.

F&L in LV isn't really about the psychedelic experience. It's more about like, the death of an era.

Movies can be made for artistic purposes, but come on, that's such a small amount of the movies that are made. Money runs pretty much everything, believing otherwise is naive.

I just mean in the way it was produced, as opposed to lower quality (non-Hollywood) 'camera-in-hand' films like the Intrepid Traveller and His Merry Band of Pranksters Look For A Kool Place, or something like that.

    What's with all the labels?
    Gansta, hippy, hick, biker?
this catergorical reasoning is faulty at it's heart, and only leads people to experience reality with a prejudice.
Remember, the enemy of truth is not lie, it's prejudice.

By limiting people to certain groups based on their outward manners or dress is only going to make you lose out on meeting and experiencing new ideas.
Saying someone isn't 'hippy' cause yadda yadda is just plain silly and childish. I got over the whole 'clique' thing in highschool.

But, yeah, no movie has an accurate depiction of drugs, or drug usage, and sometimes even promotes drugs.
Most of the time it demonizes them so, yeah, hollywood, fuck it.

How about a movie that portrays a person's transition from brainwashed citizen to 'enlightened' individual? That transition being spurred by a psychedelic experience. Even if it's just a single experience, show how it can change a person's life for better or worse.

It could be like one of those choose-your-own-ending books. You get to one part of the movie and it asks, "should Susie drop 1 tab or 2?" There would be several questions like that which would help to determine whether or not s/he has a good or bad trip and how it will affect her life. After the trip, you choose how she will react to different lasting effects of the experience. For instance, something like, "For several days following her flight, Susie periodically notices the walls, ceiling, and floor breathing--should she see a psychologist?"

I don't know, maybe it's too involved. At the very least, a movie should be made to help people know what to expect from a trip. That would make a good independent film.
