TIME TO ORGANIZE I started this thread as the result of a discussion in the "Back to the Garden" board. Be informed and check it out. http://hipforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=73895 So here is the real deal. Talk is cheap. I'd like to meet others who are seriously interested in talking about what they'd like to change, then working together to do something about it. I'm not sure how many people are members of Hip Forums, but surely there are enough to make some noise. Can you dig it? First Things First Show Your Iinterest - If you are on board with this idea, show your interest by posting your replies in this thread or sending me a PM. If there is enough interest to continue, I will post the results next week and those who are still interested can begin discussions. A. Propose one specific issue you would like to address B. Propose a name for this group Here are my ideas. I'm stoked about hearing yours! ISSUE: The pharmaceutical lobotomizing of America's youth. Depression medicine does wonderful things, but calling normal, rambuntious kids ADD and medicating them helps no one. Its a legitimate issue.
Right on. Thanks for your reply. No, I am not a Scientologist. I respect your opinion, and maybe I wasn't clear enough, but if you would like to debate or discuss the issue I have proposed then I welcome you to show your interest by participating in this thread as I have suggested. Propose an issue or concern that is important to you. Once we have some ideas to work with, we can then discuss, debate and find an issue we can agree on. Does that work for you? Peace - Trystn
Okay Slutter, I'll try to put it a different way. I'd like to meet others in this forum who are interested in doing more than talk about change. My idea is to form a group of people to actively work for change with regard to a common issue. For example, there are groups in America that are working to abolish the death penalty, legalize pot, and outlaw abortion. And of course there are groups that are opposed to the war in Iraq. These may or may not be issues that are important to you, but if you are not already involved with some cause that is important to you, this is your chance. So... if you would like to get involved, the first thing to do is to do is this. A. Propose one specific issue important to you. B. Propose a name for this group In my opinion, such a group does not have to limit itself to only one issue, but should only work on one at a time. Slutter, Mike did a pretty good job defining my proposed issue. Hey, if more people agree with this issue, then we can discuss it more at length at another time. But I would like to get more ideas for different issues before we do. Peace - Trystn
It's definitely an issue, and it goes hand in hand with the bigger issue of our current policy of treating the symptom rather than curing the problem, the easy way out. The system doesn't wanna deal with "problem" kids, so they suggest clinical intervention, like riddelin, etc. We had that deal with our son. Sure he's a challenge, he's like us, we raised him to question authority, and I guess that seems to be a problem with some of his teachers. All I can say is tough for them, I'm not putting him on meds just cause he's a pain the ass, he's a friggin' kid, and that's how healthy kids should act, not like a bunch of sheep. As for his Dad, yeah, I've got an edge and I'm pretty hyper myself, some might even say I've got ADD, and maybe I do, but I'm not taking meds for it. I remember my ex used to see this shrink, so I agreed to accompany her to see this loser. He talked me into taking some meds for my "problem" with being high strung. A month later I decided that while everything seemed cozy on the surface, I'd lost that edge that distinguishes me from other folks, I'd effectively become a drone, so I quit, now I got the edge back, and it's all good... Fuck the pharmeucutical industry, burn a fattie!
a freaking men brother peace and idea presenatation will fail a revolution violence and no idea isn`t revolution but mass murder
hi all, I was all ready to reply to this a couple of days ago (slacker me) but Mellow what you said hit it right on the nail (as usual ). I have young adult kids and saw a lot of their friends over the years get treated with ADD/ADHD meds, some needed it, I'm sure; and some <in my opinion> didn't. The medication "solution" was just rampant (I estimate 60% of my kids friends were medicated at some point). this was in the 80's and 90's. I hope it's different these days, I don't know. Meds are ok for people who need them, but when they're prescribed willy-nilly, they do no one any good. a lot of the kids I know of just needed some attention from their parents, they didn't have any medical conditions (IMO of course). I deduce all this from situations I know of, and parents who didn't question doctors. to some people doctors are gods who know everything. At one point it was suggested that my then 4 year old needed medication, but in my naive opinion (at the time) she was having an extreme emotional reaction to the addition of a new baby in our house. Turns out I was right (and she didn't get put on any meds). It was a challenge, at the time, but I don't think pills were the answer to that one. But at the time, medication for any type of "abnormal" behavior was considered de rigeur, and I agree with Mellow (paraphrasing), why snuff out that spirit? It's part of who we are. and "abnormal" is a matter of perspective (in some cases of course).
Thanks for the compliment, Mimosa, and the feeling is mutual BTW, I always value your view points... I would also like to extend this idea and make the statement that, while it is important to let kids be kids, it is also important to allow ourselves (as adults) to be kids too, lest we squander the child within ourselves...
For those who are new to this thread or haven't been following the results of my initial post, check out the link below. http://hipforums.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2027024#post2027024 Since it seems to be a topic of interest for discussion, I would like to pursue the issue of the over drugging of America in depth. We are all aware of our government's history and proclivity to covertly authorize, underwrite and sponsor the development of drugs for their own reasons. We have proof that they submitted unwitting soldiers to tests with LSD and other mind altering chemicals during the Viet Name Era. A time during which also, and by the way, coincided with the rebellion of America's youth and resulting social revolution. Does anyone else think that the emmergence of Attention Deficit Disorder and the resulting mass diagnoses and drugging of America's children back in the late 70's may be a conspiracy? That perhaps ADD and the drugs to treat it are the result of Big Brother's desire to find a way to insure future control of the masses in order to prevent another social/cultural revolution? While I do not ascribe to the theory as fact, I certainly don't discount it as a likely possibility. And these are the reasons why. The continued expansion and perpetuation of these so called "emotional and mental disorders" have resulted in the mass drugging of America today. Anyone who has been diagnosed and medicated for ADD, ADHD, Combative Behavior Disorder, Bi-Polar Disorder (That's a trendy one now. Half the people I know have it!), stress, depression or any other perceived malaise of the mind; anyone who has taken these drugs or know someone who does may or may not realize that they work on the frontal lobe of the brain. The frontal lobe is the biological location of our personality and emotions. Back in the day, psychiatric hospitals routinely surgically removed a portion of the frontal lobe to completely incapacitate dangerously psychotic patients. Now they accomplish the same thing on anyone who exibits abborent behavior, with a drug called Thorazine. I was once held down and forcibly injected with a healthy dose of the stuff while in a treatment center. Not because I had become dangerously psychotic, but because I expressed my emotions with to much passion. Ever seen someone on Thorazine? Ever take it yourself, or another one like it but less powerful called Amitryptaline? People on higher doses of these mood altering medications walk around like zombies, that is, if they are able to walk at all. With glazed over eyes, they stare off into space. They are oblivious to the world around them and the drool streaming from one corner of their mouth, or feces that just released itself from their bowels. Okay, so you say "Ah c'mon man! Ritalin, Prozak and all that other stuff everybody is taking these days don't do all that." Yeah they do, only on a less drastic level. Or worse, in a more drastic and unintended manner. These drugs are all designed to supress normal, albeit sometimes exaggerated emotions. Emotions like stress, depression and anger are all necessary to the normal development and functioning of the human mind. Remove or supress those, and you also start messing with other necessary functions like creativity, desire, passion and agression. And of course there is one contrary side effect of these drugs most people are familar with, a decreased sexual drive. Even if a child is diagnosed with one of these so called "disorders" and treated with some measure of succes, how do you think these drugs may effect the normal development and long term functioning of the rest of their personality and emotions. And what about the proven devasting long term side effects of these drugs on other organs of the body like the kidneys, lungs, digestive tract and liver? So why do I think that a conspiracy theory is plausible? Because our society has been conditioned to seek the quick fix and not the cure. What a simple, quick and effective way to bring problem children into compliance early in their lives so they will become productive and submissive members of the flock. As for us adults, well haleluhjah! They have now made it easy for me to disregard the fucked up state of our nation and to not feel the anger or depression caused by the increasing injustices inflicted upon me. A couple of pills a day, and I quickly become incapable of the hope, passion, will or courage to stand up and scream out, "I'm not gonna take it anymore!" and then do something about it. In addition to effective control of the masses, the money that has been, and will continue to be made in this area of the pharmaceutical and healthcare industry is incaculable. The greed of those who benefit from it will only ensure that America's best interest in this matter will be continue to be subverted. And finally, when the diagnoses of ADD was first announced, Ritalin conveniently appeared along with it as the drug of choice for treatment. Schools at that time were prevented from administering over the counter drugs to students such as aspirin and antacids, or prescription drugs without a prescription and note from parents. Yet surprisingly, schools all across America quickly and quietly procured copius amounts of Ritlan, and were allowed to administer it to students at will. And some were doing it without the parents consent! As I recall, this practice continued for a couple of years without government scrutiny, until finaly groups of outraged parents across the nation forced legislation to outlaw the practice. In summation, I submit that conspiracy or not, it is critical that the incessant over drugging of America must be slowed and reversed. How? Through the dissemination of information to the masses, educating parents and youth about these so called "disorders" from a different perspective, and by promoting the alternatives available to treating, controlling and preventing destructive behavior in children. Wanna help? hehe
