Which do you think is a better way to end a great album: with a dramatic epic song, a hauntingly quiet song, or a short, funny little ditty that makes the album all seem lighthearted (for example, "Her Majesty" on the Beatles' "Abbey Road")?

I would say "The End" would have been the best way to end a band career, but Paul ruined it with 'Her Majesty'

I put "haunting and quiet" kinda like how White:1 [beatles] ends with Julia, Picaresque [decemberists] ends with Angels and Angles, La De Da [Joel Plaskett] ends with Love This Town [and then a litle bit of conversation from the rocrding was finished "is that ok, i like that--do do do"

julia was actually one of the songs i was thinking of when i put "haunting and quiet". and i agree, "her majesty" isn't fit to be the last song on the last Beatles album.

I say dramatic and loud!!!!!!! Have a big ending, that really sums up the feeling on the album. For example "See Me Feel Me/Listening To You" on The Who's Tommy, they really went to town on that one on the original album, but instead they almost bested that song live.

Loud and filthy, like when you try to pop a very large blister with a particularly heavy war hammer.

Something quiet, like the extra song 'France' on the second Libertines album.

it all depends on the song/album really... "married with children" (oasis' definitely maybe), "champagne supernova" (whats the story morning glory?), "julia," "Spirit is near" (devendra's oh me oh my..., "effervescing elephant" (syd), "approaching pavonis mons by ballon" (yoshimi battles the pink robots).... those were all perfect album closers and all extremely different from eachother.

It depends on the album. There's no universal standard. In Beatles terms, the best examples are:

For a big climactic ending, A Day in The Life.

Quiet: Julia on White Album Disc 1.

    Happy little bit: Her Majesty

As to the debate about Her Majesty, I don't consider it the last song, I consider it a hidden feature. The End still seems like the last song to me.

Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd would definently have to have the best ending of any album i can think of, the climax with Brain Damage and Eclipse sends shivers down my spine.
But i dont know what it'd qualify as, it kind of fades out with the heartbeat

They're all good ways to end albums. Variety is the spice of life, no?

That's exactly what I was thinking would be a great way to end the album. I'd consider it quiet and haunting as far as this poll goes.

i think the frog noises (or whatever they are) at the end of the moe. album "no doy" was a funny ending, especially because you might think they're only going to last for a short time. they don't.
