A "troll" is a person who posts offensive messages with the intent of being flamed.
There are people on this forum who post extreme, potentialy offensive messages with the intent of creating spirited discussion. Whether that is "trolling" depends on the particular posts involved. (Thank you moderators.)

There are others who obviously just post to get outraged responces.

Unusual or "non-hippie" opinions are not trolling, per se. A post that suggested that homosexuals should be jailed would not nessesarily be "trolling" (Thank you moderators, for your discernment.)

The general attitude is: "Don't feed the trolls"

Somewhere in the FAQs or forum rules or somewhere in that direction there is a glossary of common terms like "troll" or "flame."

    trolling

    1. Surfing, or browsing, the Web.

    2. Posting derogatory messages about sensitive subjects on newsgroups and chat rooms to bait users into responding.

    3. Hanging around in a chat room without saying anything, like a "peeping tom."

    #2 would be your answer.
The best thing to do as was stated, don't feed the trolls. They are usually nothing but attn whores that get off on riling people up over their dumbass shit and hate to be ignored more than anything. Using the "ignore" feature on here can be helpful when there are some people that are too annoying.

yes i had experience with a very abusive troll on another website. he came onto a very happy and peaceful website and turned it upside down with his incoherent ramblings of anger and violence. there weren't any moderators of this particular website, so this troll destroyed the peaceful and trusting feeling of this website. i tried to stand up to him and then he really went after me, he started stalking me on other websites and arguing with every single post i wrote. only a few stood up to him, but he won i feel because of not having any moderators. i felt that he should have been banned, but he wasn't.

I thought trolling was the same thing as candy flipping. Being on LSD and Exstacy at the same time.

A troll is a small hairless mountain rodent that weighs up to 15 lbs and has no mouth, so must eat through a hole in its toe. The Mountain Troll mates by excreting a bitter, viscous substance that is absorbed through a gland in the skin of its mate. The Albanian MountainTroll has been known to have as many as 500 babies in a litter, and can breast feed up to 40 little trolls at a time. More than 75 percent of the total area of Albania is hilly and mountainous.

The Mountain Troll lives above 14,000 feet, in the alpine regions of the earth and lives off of gorilla dung.

The programme in partnership with the Integrated Taxonomic Information system (ITIS) of North America currently produces the Catalogue of Life - an Annual Checklist available on the Species 2000 web site and by CD ROM (contact the Secretariat). This is used by the Global Biodiversity Information facility (GBIF) as the taxonomic backbone to its web portal. Species 2000 receives funding from GBIF.
