You quoted the golden rule proverb wrong. Do unto others as you would have others do unto you. Then, yes, two wrongs don't make it right. However, I like my proverb. Two wrongs do make it fair. One wrong ensures that it will never be right, so fair is as close to right as you can get from there.
No one ever said life was fair, bro. Plus, if you do wrong, it makes you no better than the first guy. Also, if you believe in karma, it's still bad karma, fair or not.
Theres something about that "no one ever said life was fair" line that makes me want to just punch that person in the face.. (not directed towards trippin )
Life may not be fair, but that doesn't mean we cannot strive to make it so. We should reach for justice, equity, and fairness in everything that we do.
an eye for an eye (?) Ghandi said an eye for an eye makes the world blind...which of course makes sense And my new favorite....FAIR is just another four letter F- Word! thanks for bringing this up, great way to start my day blessings
I certainly hope not! I guess it is a dumb saying, and Alsharad and Sage-Pheonix have good points. And in some cases, it might be fair and understandable to do wrong, like if someone hits you and you hit back. But to mull it over for a while, then to go exact your retribution is wrong. If someone kills your dog, and you then go kill his, all you get then is two dead dogs; yours won't benefit by the killing, and it probably won't make you feel a lot better. Though revenge often is a sweet feeling, at least at first, it may not prove to be so sweet in the long run.
This made me think for a second. I think it's quite understandable if, say, someone hits you, and you hit them back. But, killing someone else's dog after they kill yours, that's pretty unfair. I think, it has some kind of relationship with consequence. It's understandable to hit someone back, because what consequences will there be? Probably nothing at all. But, you should never take a life just because someone else did. That has some serious long-term implications. An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind, but a punch for a punch doesn't really matter because there are no serious consequences. Heck, fighting can even be fun.
fighting with friends can be fun, but fighting an enemy generally isn't. Like, who knows if they'll whip out a gun or knife? Plus, even with just fists and kicks someone could get seriously hurt. Eye for an eye, punch for a punch...what's the difference? Seems to just propogate more violence. And I hope we can agree that violence isn't very mature or constructive or good.
Generally. I've found fun in fighting people I disliked, even in losing, as long as I know I gave it my best. I don't mean to disagree with you, and I agree that (generally) violence is a bad thing. But it is important to not forget the good that can be found in violence. Violence is often healthy, a way of relieving aggression. As a student of kendo, I have found great relief in sparring with my peers. Violence, in its infinite destructiveness, can also be helpful in illuminating evil and showing someone the right path to take. Just playing the devil's advocate here. =)
If we're bringing up childhood moral dillemas, anybody want to take a crack at "Do as I say, not as I do?"
