Dayum... 320... that's pretty respectable. Took up weightlifting myself when I quit smoking pot... my best bench right now is 275... when my shoulders aren't acting up. I got 320 up just once... last March. Slight tear resulted in my right pec and been taking it a bit easy ever since.

This is clearly after the fact and likely MJP has left anyway- but in the interest of keeping on topic....

From what I've observed, not only should you not try to travel with the joints taped to your leg but you should seriously think about giving the habit up entirely. It appears to be affecting your judgement very negatively and associating you with people who very much don't have your best interests at heart.

 

MJP is a good guy, and just because he made some mistakes does not give you the right to make fun of him, even if you were just "playing around" and "just kidding" with him it still hurt him.

This thread has become extremely idiotic and I am astounded that it is still going strong. I was recently banned for participating in a thread like this, but it was far less hostile. Non-stoners, leave. Stoners, chill and let these fuckers go back to their high and mighty forum-wide idiocy.

 

It does seem to have degenerated into an insult fest.

I'm not your garden variety non-toker... I partook for 20 years and have some experience to back up what I might say to MJP. Of course, I've posted a couple responses from that perspective and was not too surprised at the lack of response/acknowledement as most people into using and/or abusing a substance (whether it be pot, alcohol, or what-have-you) are only interested in viewpoints that reflect unquestioning approval of what they are doing.

Anyway, I'm not dead-set against marijuana use... it's asthma (or something like it) that prevents me from partaking today. My impression of MJP from what he has posted is of a decent kid who is too trusting of the wrong people. The culture that he gets involved with as a result of his daily use isn't doing him any favors. Additionally it seems that his judgement leaves more than a little to be desired. I'm not unconvinced that heavy pot use has the potential to impair judgement, though from my experience it tends to be those folks whose ability to think straight is shaky to begin with.

The biggest hing MJP needs is a stable support mechanism- a support group of friends who will tend to steer his judgement in constructive directions. He's not likely to find that in any drug subculture. My opinion is, not only should he not take any pot on his vacation, but he should consider taking an extended vacation, not only from weed, but from the element it seems to have attracted in his neck of the woods. If he has MIT potential (his posts do not tend to reflect or support that), the biggest favor he can do for himself is to buddy up with other folks who are destined to attend university and spend his energy preparing for college. The bonus might be that none of his new friends are likely to rifle through his car and take his cd's or steal cash from him.

I'm not going to participate in name calling... the best chance for advice to be taken is if it is read and taken seriously in the first place and granted, if he hasn't left for good already, he is not likely to be interested in good advice over the easy suggestions of enablers.

 

Now THAT's what I'm talking about. Constructive criticism as opposed to flat-out insults and name-calling.

Bench isn't part of weightlifting. Weightlifting is the snatch and clean and jerk. Powerlifting is bench press, deadlift, squat. I used to do the latter, now am working more towards the former.

Bunch your shoulders together, put a slight arch in your back, bring your hips back and plant your feet underneath in line. Pause the weight on the chest, at the solar plexus. I used to do 350 down to 265 or so. Got crashed up in a bike crash and was out of the gym 1 1/2 years. If you do that and keep your elbows from bending more than 90 degrees you're using triceps and lats, not pecs and shoulders. Pec tears are no joke.

Well you start out with constructive critique and then you descend into where we're at now - hoping that he'll be basically shamed into wising up. Kid don't listen, you gotta scale it down to easily understood words. Cause he always turns it into "but I really want to be able to..." or "I wish it was...." or "it should be...."

We are acting our age. And it gets worse as you get older. Trust me, when I get into my 70s and time gets really short, I will be wasting VERY VERY little of it repeating myself.

Yet in his own mind, he's this intelligent kid who can do great things. I disagree. Kid can't spell and has no motivation to get the grades he needs to succeed in science. Science is a ROUGH world, you pretty much need a Ph.D to get a half decent job, especially in physics. My father has a Ph.D in physics, and he used to tell me constantly he was glad to get his job when he did.

The difference is that you and HHB were insulting and condescending, while stinkfoot was nice about it and was still able to get the point across. All you guys did was call MJP stupid and idiotic, which makes it nearly impossible to notice any of the helpful advice that you may have posted in the process.
