Many people say that W.A.Mozart was the greatest composer who ever lived.
I don't know about that - Bach and Beethoven are both up there in the same league I think - either way, he was certainly great.
I like the way Mozart was not only a total master of technique, but was also such an inspirational composer. Some of his music is as close to perfection as you can get.
Any other Mozart lovers out there?

I spent 10 weeks in Salzburg, Austria, where he was born. I heard it all the time and grew to like it very much. His 7th and 9th, maybe concerto 26 are probably my favorite; his Ave Maria is incredible.

personally, i don't like to give any composer the label of all time great. i don't honestly believe that the spirit of music works that way. music is causal, and is not only affected by music itself, but by other social, cultural, technological developments. the history of music is totally dependant on a whole series of developments. music of today is dependant upon the developements made centuries ago. similarly, all composers have different intentions, motivations and goals. i have never been a believer in creating a hierarchy for music. yeah, there are canons in music, but realistically, they don't necessarily stick anymore. people create their own canons and rightly so. music is a set of interactions and communications. having said all this, mozart is pretty damn sweet. his concertos are excellent to perform. and its probably best not to get me started on beethoven, especially his late period, wow, is all there is to say on that, lol.

He's a great composer. I like his Symphony No. 40 (it's one that anybody would realize) and most of his instrumental concertos with the clarinet concerto and horn concertos being my favorite.

I would consider Handel, Vivaldi and Beethoven better in my mind, though. Mozart was still a genius and I won't deny that, just not my absolute favorite.

No way! Mozart was writing works at 5 years old that someone at 30 should be able to write! He was a mastermind. I'm not saying Bach is not good, he is, but at the same time Mozart can't be considered a music god either. (Even though I think he is [IMG])

    Vivaldi's my music God.

Bach has some pretty good pieces... and he is kind of the father of music theory... but give Mozart some credit he has some good pieces!

That he does, Im not saying he blows, but I tend to find his music a little bit dull, and I get bored of it very quickly. I dont know what it is that draws my heart into Bach's pieces, maybe the use of insane scales, the up down up down sound, brings tears to my eyes instantly! :)

Comparing Bach and Mozart is just not possible.
Bach did everything that was possible at his time, Mozart wrote mostly really "easy" music.
BUT: Mozart wrote really nothing at the age of 5 years! His father, Leopold did in his name, that´s fact.
The music of Mozart lives from his real genius instrumentation, you can play Bach on every instrument, and it will sound like Bach.
Mozart tried to use Bach´s counterpoint for example in his "missa solemnis in c-minor",
but never reached his complexity(does this word exist? hope u understand ;))
It was a very different time, very different soundings, they have really not much in common.

bach and mozart come from different eras of music so.. comparing them outside of personal taste is a waste of time.
ugh and dont even say vivaldi. [i have a tendency towards hating baroque music]
theyre all credible and contributing composers. the fact that all of them laid down the foundation for all classical music and all music branched from classical music makes them incredibly genius (no shit).

but if youre only listening to well. bach and mozart.
    thats a bit sad.
this is not a criticism of their creativity or genius but more a speculation of the music eras they catered to: the music they wrote is highly predictable. if you listen to several of their works and are familiar with their works.. then it all begins to sound the same and the chord progressions become.. stale.

    listen to shostakovich.
    or stravinsky.
    branch out from the classics.

Our preferences for music like everything else is influenced by the culture we belong, and identify with. Mozart in his day was seen not as an innovator but almost as an avantgarde, because of his use of excessive emotion. If your depth in music appreciation is deep, and your listenning keen, you will dig mozart, but not just for his tonal highs and lows but rather for his quintesential use of deep chasms and space.
In my opinion his music hails from an entirely different sphere. he is truly the genius of all genuises.
