AMSTERDAM - The introduction of a ban on cannabis smoking in Amsterdam to fight the problems caused by youths smoking weed is 'a drunken measure' according to a spokesman from the BCD (Cannabis Bond). "it is a measure with a high ethnic taste, meant to tackle mainly Maroccan youths hanging about" The bond doubts whether police will be able to tackle problem youths that cause trouble on the streets. "For thirty years on the Amsterdam metro, we've had junkies that blow, smoke, inject, and piss. And we cant manage to control these problems." read the rest here http://dutchnewz.com
That's absurd, I've been planning a trip to go there in the next year or so, THEY BETTER NOT START MAKING BANS AND RESTRICTIONS! It will be a sad sight if this actually goes through......
if they do ban, ppl are still gonna smoke, its just like here, im sure if it is banned, that ppl will boycott the ban somehow, theyre not gonna put most of amsterdams market away for some immigrant kids breakin windows or something.
Nothing has gone threw yet, and I doubt it will. For the same reasons tobacco and alcohol will always be legal in the U.S., they are large factors in the economy, the dutch would put themselves into a recession by banning weed.
Where is your source that it hasn't gone through. It has been agreed on by the Ministerraad (Council of Ministers). It applies to trouble spots, mainly in the bad areas of Amsterdam where the tourist doesn't usually go, so you will still have your bulldog, and all the rest of the coffeeshops catering for tourists. BUT...there is also talk of not allowing the cannabis to be sold to anyone who is not Dutch nationality..I doubt if THAT will happen, too much revenue for the government.
My source would be a friend of mine LIVING in amsterdam, and I know for a fact he was at a coffee shop last night, and he hadnt heard anything about this until I mentioned it to him. They may very well attempt to get things under control, but it will not be banned, or made unavailable.
I appreciate that maybe your friend hasn't heard about it. It wouldn't be talked about in your average staff canteen. My source was from a press release from the actual government. I agree that in the near future there won't be a universal ban on coffeeshops, but who knows what the government are thinking.
That's actually a good idea, if everyone is so worried about it, maybe some of us (or all) should start writing to the council voicing our opinions as an outsider on the matter. Maybe with enough protest they will see the actual effect their decisions would be making.
