Alright, I can respect that they have a lot of fans, a good sense of humor, even talent but man I watched their NYE DVD and was bored to tears. I mean, all they do is noodle and noodle and noodle...there was so much useless nonsense and too few songs with structure. I mean Jerry, Trey...they could take a song and make it breathe for 25 minutes. All Umph was doing was aimlessly wandering around. They're what gives jamming a bad name. Man stop playing nothing and play something. Well this'll piss alot of folks off. Sorry. I just don't get the popularity of these guys.
i like ump, a little...i don't mind going to there shows.....when they're in town...but i don't make it a point to go out of my way to see them...
this strikes lots of improvers who either aren't ready or simply have an off night. NOt an Umphrey's fan, although they did a good job at Big Summer Classic Red Rocks. Similar vein: meander on endlessly .
It took me almost a year to appreciate them. I agree they are not everyone's cuppa tea, they are different from any band I have ever heard. At first they annoyed me, but then like a foreign language, "it" started to make sense, and I listen to them a lot now. There is a lot of subtle complexity to their music, it sounds like just noodling but really it's not.
no, I didn't say that, just that it took me awhile to like them. I didn't at first so I relate to what you're saying.....I found them annoying for quite awhile.... there's a lot of music by other musicians I still find annoying but figure it's maybe because I haven't listened enough.
I can appreciate their talent and have been listening to them for about a year, but they don't really take me to that place that I'm letting to get to in music. I'm not really an lyrics guy, but I do like well composed songs that tell a story. for that reason, Assembly of Dust, Ryan Montbleau, Ekoostik Hookah etc are more my cup of tea in terms of current jam bands
Well, that's saying time will bring you to accept music you find annoying at the present time...(true in some cases, sure) I gave them a shot, and I still find their jams to be hollow and lacking of any power... And how can you stand the vocals?
i only heard them once just yesterday for about 5 minutes, and i really enjoyed them. i didnt hear them sing, so maybe thats why i dont hate them right now, hehehe
they're not really that bad. i really enjoyed when one of the guitar players (the short guy) came out onstage with Jazz Mandolin Project....it was awesome.....i saw them in LA and was blown away, but then i got bored and left during the 2nd set.....then i saw them at WAKARUSA and it was a sad substitute for STS9.....but they do have alot of talent....but not at jamming in my opinion.....
ok maybe yall dont like them bc theyre arent a hippie jamband bullshit. they are way ahead of that.... sorry but im a huge umphreys fan....and im a huge dead/phish fan as well. but i know NOT to lump umphreys into the "hippie jamband" category. but i do understand them not being everyones cup of tea, it took me a few times to get into it but GO SEE THEM LIVE, and more than once. its the most intense thing if you really listen, they shred it on the gee-tars. pay attention.
oh I do like them very much. Miss Tinkle's Overture is a fav. just kinda makes me wanna go wild. so awesome, LOVE IT! Plunger too =) glad you brought them up
I know what your saying man and then like just everyonce in awhile they will get into a jam your starting to like and then they will just totally go somewhere else with it
it does have something to do with it, a few people commented on liking "other jambands much better"...so that was my response.
that is exactly why I didn't like them at first!! glad someone else hears/heard the same thing. but finally, I got used to that quirk in their playing and now I like it, coz I got used to it. It did take a long time though, for me. they were just different from anyone I'd ever heard before. there is a thread on the UM msg board "the bort" that describes a lot about how they play. there is definitely a method to the madness.
this band is beyond good the 61 shows ive seen them play have been nice. they get better every time i see them. i guess u love or hate brendon's voice, i love it very pure and unlike anyone else in the "jamband" world...which i dont think they fit in. they are unlike anyone else right now mixing prog with jam, and heavy metal.and the new dvd is sick and it was a great nye party..8 days and i will be at the nye rock show once again
