I love AVG Anti-Virus! It does exactly what I tell it to, without fail or hassle. It checks for virtually all of the same viruses that Norton and McAfee do, and even some that neither check for. It's completely free for personal use, not even "shareware" or "trial," but free. It integrates into my operating system far better than both McAfee and Norton. It doesn't have random quirks that piss me off. (In the past, I would press the button for "turn off on-access scanning" by McAfee, which SHOULD prevent McAfee from scanning every file that is accessed, but even when McAfee said it was turned off, it continued to hog up over 40% of my CPU resources scanning files on access, and then proceeded to periodically crash explorer.exe.) It does exactly what I want it to (I think I said that already). Updating it takes exactly ... hold on, let me find out ... Exactly 6 seconds (not including downloading time; total time was 11 seconds) and two button clicks to download and install the update. These are the reasons why I love AVG Anti-Virus, and I think that you should too! http://free.grisoft.com/ <- Free download for use on a personal computer.
I heartily concur.... I decided to give it a run alongside Symantec AVCE on my home computer over 6 months ago, and have found it exceptionally good for a totally FREE product, and recommend it as one of the "must have free security programs" for a PC setup. http://home.iprimus.com.au/danielrex/otheresources/internet_security.htm I'm fortunate to be able to use SAVCE v10 as well, and it has advantages in a large network situation, but AVG is tops for the home user, and very economical! Great thread - we need to promote good, economical software! (starting with essential security gear)
im not crazy about AVG but it is free. micro trend or Norton but Norton rips you off every 6 months micro trend is 1 whole year.
AVG Rawks. Hard. I use and install it on every machine I come across. FREE. Grisoft has a sure winner in their hands.
Yeah, if I ever decide to purchase an anti-virus software, it would definitely be the AVG Anti-Virus Professional. =)
I think that nod32 avg and avast have a good track record, avg has a good integration with the system components and has a good detection average, nod32 leaves less of a footprint on cpu usage and system memory load and also has a good detection average avast is totally free after registration and the prog has nice features but I found it to need much resources, when running after I configured it,it ran great it also has a good detection average...... for linux avg is a comand line scanner I use fprot with a qtfprot frontend and for mail scanning I use clamav and spamassin on debian etch kernel 2.6.14.4
According to test facility's, AVG AntiVirus only picks up 50% of the viruses... Norton and all the other virus scanner are probably just as worse, norton picks them up but says it cant delete them, great... My advice: Move over to linux!
the first line of defence against virusses starts with yourself even when you run linux you can get compromised when you accept untrusted packages or visit untrusted websites....
If I had to use a free antivirus it wouldn't be AVG. I would go with Avast. It's much better in my opinion. My second option would be Antivir.
Very true. But Linux definitely helps. Besides, Linux is for 1337 people only, right? Who asked you?! :$
I'm certainly interested in looking at Avast and Antivir now to see if their free versions do well. Green: when you say you hate Norton, do you mean the Anti-Virus, or the "Internet Security" suite (firewall, anti-spam). I've found the home user editions of those are awkward, horrible! Yet,... I'm happy with the Symantec AV "Corporate Edition", obviously it doesn't bug you for subs and you can set up a server to auto-update 100 PCs in minutes, V10 has some anti-spyware intelligence etc. Of course, a network, and a corporate version is not the same as expensive home user editions. Where I've helped home users with problems registering, updating Norton gear it can be a real nuisance. It seems that there is good free AV software out there, you shouldn't have to pay for it!
I was a huge fan of AVG and still think its a great program but it did not pick up on shit that eventually crashed two of my hard drives. I am now a much bigger fan of avast! I did have better luck with AVG that the ever popular norton and mcafee, I hated those two and have nothing good to say about them at all.
True, but as long as you have a good password the account root, and dont download untrusted packages or anything with root, nothing much can happen plus linux is far more easy to secure... windows cant be secured unless you pull the internet plug, and even then you have to be carefull andcrs2, I will do my best to find the article back
Okay, I found the article, however it is in dutch, and I believe they are refering to AVG 6.0 and I'm not sure if they are talking about 7.* aswell :S Here is the article in dutch: http://frontpage.fok.nl/news.fok?id=36875 Quickly said, it was a test from two organisations, one from holland and one from the UK. The last few lines are: i'll translate that: The worst app is AVG, who leaves 4 out of 5 trojans it scans for what they are, without taking action. (Oh so it was 80%) Norman isnt much better, norman doesnt pick up 50% of the viruses. Well known applications, such as Mcafee and norton are doing their job, and detect all viruses. (From my experience I know that norton detects them but cant do anything )
AVG is not that bad..it's free..yeah.. I used to run Bitdefender before.. lateley Winfixer got into my system.. i guess it's a nasty browser hijacker.. Trojan VBS Redlof could not be healed by AVG. Anybody any advice??
