I have three friends who are going to visit China in the spring. We were discussing what they were going to do there and the first thing they said was go to a resteraunt and order dog meat! What would you say when they respond that dog meat is just like any other meat?
my sweetie has tried dog (Japanese banquet in Florida. Had to IMPORT the dog.) he said chewy like game meat, kind of sweet. If you kill one animal for food why is another so far off?
The thing about eating animals is that you need to know 1) How they were raised (let me explain why there are health regulations in this country!) 2) What kind of animal (swine carries trich, birds avian flu, and dogs carry parasites that make trich look FRIENDLY!) 3) The skill of the chef.... I would NOT eat anything I hadn't prepared personally in China. I'd wanna wash the vegetables REALLY well, human manure carries typhoid at best and HIV at worst...
So how do you prepare dog? Or cats for that matter?? I was just thinking how high on the food chain we are. We share the lofty position with bears, sharks both of which humans eat too. I have an old Joy of Cooking cookbook that has a recipe for bear cub LOL. (This will get us flamed by peta for sure).
IG, what about hunters here? those animals are not raised in controlled environments. why would dog be worse? I do think I'd research that if I were going (maybe take antifungals, antibiotics whatever) or stick with the scorpions.
I can't (or really I should say I can) even believe that anyone would thin it was o.k. to eat a Dog or Cat. Hae most of you been to Asia. Try going into the open air markets and picking out a dog or cat that looks up at you and mews or wimpers, which is EXACTLY what they do. It is barbaric, and the only ones who really do eat alot of dogs is in Korea. Everywhere else,it must be smuggled to you. If you think this is wrong, I suggest you go over to Asia again, or Africa, and ask in a loud voice where you could find a dog or cat to eat. It is BARBARIC that a person who is brought up with animals being our closest counterparts and our protectors, then would chop them up and enjoy them over rice. It is sickening. Mel Gibson has dog brought to him when he is filming in Africa. It is ILLEGAL there, but as the idiot says, "I just can't forget the taste". I would love to carve his private parts and put them on a plate and expalian how I know it is terrible, but honestly his cut up, bloddy parts a juicy and delicious. That is a ridiculous notion,no matter how the animals are kept. Unless you are in the throws of starvation, and even then, try something else. Most on this board are really decent humans, except for a few glarig exceptions, and you know who you are. If you makea habit of eating these creatures, I can only hope against hope that it makes you terribly ill. You are disgusting. Please try and go after my dog, as I would love to see her take a chunck out of your neck. Don't you have ANY feelings for animals. except punishing them when you think they are doing someting to spite you, and I believe you probably believe that. You are extremely ignorant. Maybe the next time you try this dish, you will choke on it.
NOT ONE SINGLE BIT!!!!! Any other questions. And, if I did eat beef, which I haven't since I was a teen, would dog and cat eating be o.k. with you? You and I seem to think the exact same on most topics so I'm shocked that yu would even ask sucha question. Dogs and cats are not to eat. Do you have a problem with Hindus that won't eat a cow, even when you see their bones sticking out? Seems strangs to others, but it is their religion, not what they thinktast really delicious. And Mel Gibson is a moron with an idot father who is a nazi-sympathizer. And Mel is NOT for equal rights for women. As Glenn Close, who was cast in Hamlet with hm said, Beautiful on the outside, but he is one of the ugliest people that I have ever met."
I'd rather eat a dog that was treated well while it was raised, than a cow that was treated badly. However, odds are that if your friend eats any kind of meat in China the animals were *not* treated well at all. I've seen some video's on websites against dog meat; it wasn't the fact that it was dog that turned me off, but the fact that the animals were kept in extremely small cages, were dragged, kicked and beaten into the slaughterhouses... animal rights in most Asian countries are not exactly a priority...
They might think its wierd and 'wrong' that we eat cow, sheep etc I dont like the thought of eating dog or horse but people do it - i wouldnt eat anything from china because of the way they kill most things - they dont do it as humane as we do
Exactly, Wiggy. The Hatians who worked with my sweetie were repulsed by the fact that Americans ate pork. "But a pig is a clean and loving animal," they would say, BUT when this probably once in a lifetime, last shot without going back to the deadly turmoil at home chance to have dog, they scammed for DAYS trying to figure out how to get the leftovers (better than the meal bennies at the employee cafeteria, as they would see three day old leftovers on that line). In a situation where humans adapt and put what animals they can into their cuisine, and look at how limited the West can be: cattle, sheep/goats, pigs, chickens, turkeys, maybe goose or duck; I say that human animals will do what they need to survive. I daresay a diet with occasional dog, or even scorpions, is overall better than a twinkie fest, or daily coca cola. Dogs are probably not bred for food. THese probably are strays in a nation where animals are strictly utilitarian (fish in bowls and song birds aside, possibly). When you are NOT sitting comfortably in a warm dry place with electricity and telephone and Internet service, be it Milwaukee, Manchester, Milan or Mumbai, when you are hungry and your children or younger siblings, or parents are depending upon you to keep them ALIVE, then perhaps you will have the moral position to tell the world how they must eat, and threaten physical violence to them. Luckily, I have always managed sustenance, even from food pantries and dumpster diving. My son and I have survived on celery and carrots with ramen noodles (no packets) for weeks at a stretch. I know in the States, and probably near India's vegetarian communities, it is possible to survive on the non-meat leftovers of the higher-class. I shudder to think what it could be like on the streets of Mexico City, or Tel Aviv or Lahore. Even in the Carribean, the culture has compact nutrition, usually with some form of flesh.
CheshireCat (and anyone else with their undies in an uproar): Ohhhhhhh BOO FUCKING HOO. Koreans eat dog (yes, I lived there for 7 years so I know) and Filipinos eat snake (lived there too) and Thais eat monkey (and there) and the Yanomamo eat spiders and pre-Columbian Amazonians were cannibals and that's called cultural diversity and get the fuck over yourself and stop hating on everyone who doesn't think and act exactly like you do you fascist, elitist assholes. And Happy New Year.
