This is kinda gross read at your own risk- I wash my hair once or twice a week, since it's cool out and we're not at the beach. I have scalp build up. It's like, this..junk. I use dreadhead shampoo and bronners. I think I might have had scalp build up before my dreads but since I combed my hair it might not have been a problem. I am not talking flakes. I mean if I scratch my head, I get white stuff under my nails which feels slightly oily but not like a grease lump. It's not gritty like sand, but not mushy either. It's like a think paste. It doesn't smell bad, but it really bothers me that I have it. I bathe every day so it's not a hygiene problem. A-what is it? B- how can I get rid of it? C- I wil not put anything in my hair except waxes. D-is this common?
could be that when you wash your dreadies that your dreads are getting all of the soap and the scalp isn't getting enough??? or a bit of build up from shampoo??? i noticed after i dreaded my hair that i had to get right between my locks and apply shampoo directly to my scalp otherwise it didn't get the good scrubbing that i wanted. you could put some shampoo in a squirt bottle (like an old dish soap bottle ect.) and mix in a bit of water, give it a good shake so that it's sudzy and apply it directly to your scalp. give your scalp a good massage and rinse out really well. thats what i do to ensure that my scalp stays nice and clean and fresh hope this helps!
Maybe the scalp doesn't get enough soap, din't think of that. I don't think it's soap buid up since I use dread shampoo and Dr Bronners and rinse well, but that might be right. Another thing, when I wash, the build-up melts a bit (or something) and is scraped off more easily (so gross sorry!) Blech, see this is why I need help, how embarrassing.
A) its a build up of scalp, grease, shampoo and other random bits probably. B) the grease will get rid of itself over time, i dont personally advise using Dr Bronners and other shampoos etc like that. Unless its the soap bars. because most liquid soaps control chemicals which wont dissapear. you will allways have skin coming off, it happens all over your body its only noticable on your scalp because it can come off in clumps and gets stuck in the hair. C) DONT USE WAX!! waxes do NOT help dreading. They make grease problems WORSE and they go MOULDY. not scare stories, TRUE. D) yes its common enough. its down to your skin type etc. Greasy hair for exampl is greay because we use shampoos which strip our natural grerase, so our body makes up for it by creating twice as much. whne you stop using chemical shampoos your hair is still making twice as much grease so it needs time to adjust.
See my thread about my deep cleaning concoction~ It' s awesome!!! Tea tree is so important for clean dreads~ and baking soda. I get yucky build up like that too and I swear by my recipe!
A- It's probably just dead skin and a build up of shampoo etc. B- The only way I can think of getting rid of it is to maybe wash your hair more thoroughly and make sure your rinse it very well. Maybe wash your hair more or rinse it more or something? C- I don't think you should use wax.. D- Probably, I have it as well but not as bad. I just think mine is because I wash my hair only once a week, sometimes once every two weeks or more (because I am lazy). Sorry, that wasn't much help was it? hah.
yes, everyone has been helpful. I really dislike the smell of Tea Tree oil. I like peppermint. Does the teatree smell stay? I am assuming it would.
its common, i have it too. it probably cuz u dont brush ur hair, and its nothing to worry about really. its just cuz the skin cant really fall out or be brushed out so it builds up. peace~
