that still doesnt make sense. you also said they arnt a "hippie jamband bull shit" but they are a jam. so what the hell are you talking about? they're ahead of what?
mission: stamp out genre labels like "jamband", I never have figured out why we have to label music anyway. that's my take on that. UM does jam, but not like anyone else, and they are innovative; some of us think so anyway. So maybe that could mean "ahead". (but that was not my post anyway, I just agree).
THANK YOU mimosa, you hit it. and timeoutofmind, stop being so defensive about your "jam" music....just bc theyre on jambase doesnt mean you can lump them with phish, string cheese, panic. bc in my opinion the only thing in common between "jambands" is the fans. no music is alike. umphreys isnt hippie bullshit and youll notice that when you SEE them if you havent already...you arent gonna see "heady brahs" selling grilled cheeses, thats all i mean by "hippie jamband bullshit". people actually go in the show and dont sit outside trying to make money and say they went "on tour". thats besides the point of this whole thread, but thats a deeper explanation of what i meant when i said they were "ahead" since i have to explain every word i type to you. and let me guess, what the hell? that doesnt make sense. hey you could say that to everything if you have no brain. all the people like me, mimosa, umphreysrules, and the others that have posted on liking umphreys are saying is they have a way to their jams, and it isnt everyones cup of tea, but it shouldnt be dismissed as that they dont know what theyre doing, etc. like what you want, but my honest opinion is see music LIVE atleast once, usually more to really get the feel. it took me more than once seeing umphrey's to "get it" but i kept trying.
your rediculous. i wasn't being defensive, i just wanted to know what you ment by "they're ahead of it." and i have no brain? wow you know me so well. your so ignorant, you just assumed i hate UM because i asked you what you ment and got "defensive" but i am an umphrey's fan and im seeing them for new years.
They are certainly innovative and unique - I can't deny that. They grow on me more and more every time I hear them. Kind of reminds me of Phish in a way - not their music, but my experience with them. It took me a while to get into Phish. I heard them for the first time in 91 and was like, okay they can play, but it doesn't drive me. By the time 94' rolled around, I was seeing 25 + shows a year. I'm guessing I'll enjoy UM more and more as time goes on - hopefully they keep it tight and don't fizzle out though, which unfortunately was my experience with Phish after 98 and SCI after about 2001. In all honesty though, perhaps the biggest hinderance in me really getting into UM is my passion for Assembly of Dust. Reid's lyrics and Adams guitar are the most electrifying music to see live for me today. It's unfortunate that they don't play much outside of New England and NY - they're the best act on the road IMO right now. Can't wait for NYE
You stupid fucking hippies. When are you ever going to learn to progress beyond the Grateful Dead and Phish. It's 2005 for god's sake. Wake up and smell reality instead of all the patchouli you've been using as "deodorant". Dedicating an entire thread to hating on another band is about as stupid as attending an SCI concert. Seriously, what the fuck is wrong with you people? Oh wait, I forgot... you're a bunch of STUPID FUCKING HIPPIES!!! Umphrey's holds more talent in half their band than 2 or 3 of your precious hippie bands combined. But I guess you lops wouldn't know that because you're too busy hoola-hooping and dancing around like a bunch of fucking children in Neverland. Tell you what. Do us Umphrey's fans a favor and stay away from our band. We don't like you, you stink and your women are hairy apes. Stick to your bunk molly, shitty food, hepatitis and oh so "heady" lifestyle. Stupid fucking hippies...
timeoutofmind- i didnt say you have no brain, but i implied that anyone could say "that doesnt make sense" to everything... and i explained to you perfectly well what you asked. i believe you were the one that began this nonsense when you got snappy and kept attacking my "hippie jamband bullshit" remark. i never assumed you hated UM, when i explained (as i did earlier) what my point as well as other's were on enjoying the band it was not directed towards you, we arent the only two in this thread. many others at the begining commented on them "noodling around" and all that. enjoy new years. really.
in regards to the soon to be benned MrX's post (how do those folks find us? sitting in mommy's basement smoking nasty ditchweed while looking up one term over and over?) THe last bunk molly salesman I saw was a frat-boy looking UM head with a cooler of overpriced Fat Tire... like you can't get it IN the venue. Note to all lot vendors: MDMA is Extasy. Meth is not, and should not be in the press tabs. Find better sources or field test. Umphreys themselves had reason to be proud of their performance. They were tight, crisp and didn't have tech problems (wind and rain abound in 30 minute intervals at Red Rocks.) But New Monsoon and even Cheese still did a better job of connecting with where they were and who they were playing for.
Mr X, what a hoot, talk about stereotypes, I got yours brother. couldn't help responding, though usually I do not succumb to trolls. lol though. thanks drumminmama for your help too.... Merry Christmas!!
I do love alot of the connection, which I'm not ashamed to admit... SCI has come a ways. But people really need to just chill out... I like UM too and I'm just not a barrier person. Fuck a five dollar burrito...
Hey now I've had kynd veggie burritos that were WORTH $5! but then again a big "yuppie burrito" is two meals for me.... I had to laugh because my good words for SCI were because at home they remembered all of us who made them what they are today: those of us who supplied the hoops in the early years, the first and second stage artists who did something other than airbrush, those of us who traded tapes, not discs, to build fanbase by spreading the word, those of us who went to Jamaica for the International Incident, those of us who also supported Keller while he and then girlfriend Emily traveled in a van with the dogs, those of us who saw we needed to take our SCI discussions off the Leftover Salmon e-mail list and onto its own...and did the same for Yonder off IncidentaList Yeah they have gone a long way, and I don't begrudge their sucess, but they tend to forget for most of the year who they were. At least they still do the Solstice benefit show.

i been an umphrey's hater since i first ever heard them. ive given them a good 10 or so chances at thier shows, but i rarely make it to the third song. i thiknn the longest i got was the middle of the third one. then i wander off. thier music never really goes anywhere, for as manynotes that are hit, they alwasy are in the same place. i like it best when they rip off a trey rift, then change the last note, and base thier whole song around that. dont they realize that everyone in the crowd has seen phish? i just wanna know how they got thier equipment, was it credit cards? rich parents?
i do agree with the note change thing, and the jam changing....but i don't understand why everyone having seeing phish would matter......
