I have black mold growing on the buds of my bromeliad. What causes this, and what can I do about it?

Check the stems for any kind of scale insects, aphids or whitefly...they will leave behind waste that resembles 'sooty mold'.
Also make sure you have really good circulation and are not overwatering.

Insects love to attack new tender buds so I would do a good check for any insects.

I looked around the web and had a hard time coming up with anything about your problem, you could call a local greenhouse and ask them...usually they are very helpful.
Usually an oil spray is used for fungal problems.

where do you water it? You need to pour the water inside of the plant like down into the leaves. That could be your problem. What variety is it?

I'm watering it correctly, and I can't find any signs of insects anywhere. I bought this thing as an I'm Sorry plant for fiancee and the thing is all fuzzy. Not going quite as expected :)

    Peace :)

Maybe it is a faciata. Does it have a pink center and white stuff all over the leaves?

if it already bloomed, it will produce one to three babies at the base, and then the mother plant will die. Maybe that is what is happening?
