Any other Hemingway lovers out there? My parents named me after a Hemingway character (Nick Adams), and after reading the Nick Adams storiesI am glad they did!

    Some of my favorites are:
    For Whom The Bell Tolls
    Nick Adams Stories
    The Sun Also Rises
    Winner Take Nothing

    What about you all?

Your parents must be genuisusies (SP). Nick Adams was Hemingway's alter-ego.

Hemingway and William Faulkner changed writing
    in the 20th century:

    FUCK IT! I'm DRUNK.

I'll be back-- see that you are.

In the meantime, read "Hills Like White Elephants":, then, tell me what it is about.

So what? Abortion is never once mentioned, or pregnancy. This story shows Hemingway's genius-- just by dialogue, hazy and vague as it seems, he brings to life 2 characters and shows how their relationship will end badly very soon.

This talent is given, not learned.

Actually, he was a well educated man with a knack for watching people (j training).
He continued to learn until he started buying into his own fame (which happens. no faulting there)
Very good use of "show don't tell."

He was an autodidact who never attended college, but spoke 4 languages.

Show-- do not tell is exactly right.

His big problem was drinking-- every other fault came from that. I know.
