Personally, I think it's outrageous. Where the fuck is our freedom? Some people will say that it causes harm to others. I don't like cell phone waves around my brain and still, people use it all the time! It justs sucks. Since we won't be able to smoke near building doors, we won't be able to smoke in downtown montreal, unless we go in the middle of the street! I think it's ridiculous...
we have those here, and i must say, i enjoy walking around in public without worrying about smelling like it, or breathing it in... it's also more of a incentive to get ppl to quit wouldn't ya think?
freedom???? freedom doesnt apply to just you ya know what about the freedom of non smokers to go to a bar/club etc without having to breathe in the crap you put into the air, or to go home without absolutely reaking???? though, the one drawback of smoking bans is it makes it MUCH harder to smoke a joint in a club if nobody is smoking cigarrettes to mask the weeed
Well, seeing at there have been smoking bans in other parts of the country for several years now.... seems expected and sort of a non issue to me. BTW, cell phones drive me crazy too. Yesterday I walked over to a guy on his second phone call in 5 minutes at our local bookstore and asked him to either get off the phone or leave. Hormones now rule my life.
I sympathize! I hatethat they are trying to shove us out into the street. The ridiculous thing really is that no one's actually given this any considerate thought to both sides of the argument. OK, some people are selfish dicks and can't stand getting a wiff now and then. And some people are gross and want to surround themselves in it 24/7. Why don't they designate smoking and non-smoking bars/buildings. If you don't like it, go to a non-smoking bar. If you want to smoke, stay far away from the non-smoking bar. Now what're the problems with that? Also, anyone who wants to ban smoking for health reasons better stop driving their car right now. All those emissions from the millions of people who drive through your neighbourhood in their SUVs getting 1 mile per gallon are doing a lot more damage to our air quality than smokers are. You breathe that shit in constantly. Yeah, and you better get rid of your cell-phones too. And stop eating fast foods or foods sprayed with pesticides and loaded with preservatives. And shelter yourselves from the sun 24/7. Cause its not like any of those things cause cancer either. I mean I understand that it's unpleasant sometimes, and I like to go outside and get the breaths of fresh air in between most of the time anyway. But making it illegal for business owners to have the option is stupid. Just be glad we live in Canada. In other countries where they don't have public health care, smokers are being fired because they cost the companies that provide their medical coverage so much. In other countries with public care, smokers are being denied treatment for the same reason. Just remember in Canada that smokers pay so much excess tax on cigarettes that we contribute more to government programs (like health care) than we take out.
wow I didnt hear of this! Im so happy about it! I live in ontario, where the ban has been in place for a while now. I am moving to mtl soon, and I was sad because I dont want to work in an environment where my health is at risk. I choose not to smoke because it causes illness. So, I change the question around... why should I be subjected to your second hand smoke? where is my freedom? As canadians we put health first..thats why we have free healthcare. It only makes sense to me that in a country where health is held high in our values that we have a smoking ban. Those who chose not to smoke shouldn't be forced to be around second hand smoke. I'm so so SO happy about this!
There are pros and cons. I mean, the average smoker or casual smoked always enjoys a cig while having a pint at a pub. So, that's a downer. But I think it's great for the bar staffs... Imagine working at a bar and breathing in all that 2nd hand smoke all day and night!! Can't be healthy. I'm pretty in the middle regarding the whole thing. I'm a very casual smoker, but I haven't had a cigarette since New Years.
At least other provinces such as British Columbia allow ventilated smoking rooms in bars. These will be fully banned in Ontario in June. Leaving no choice what so ever for smokers. It's interesting though,as the government incremently ban tobbacco they incremently increase gambling. To me gambling is worse.
We have a smoking ban here and I think It's impacted things positively. the buisnesses like bars and pubs were crying for a while that it would drop their proffits and they would go under. That's not the case for every few smokers that stop going to bars there are a same number of people that start going more often. I know a lot of people didn't go out as much because they knew they would have to breath in smoke. Also all the pubs and bars now have patio's where people go out to smoke, or get stamped and can have a smoke away from the property and get back in right away. I just think it's funny that people are willing to pay to have something kill them...
Obviously I think everyone should have the right to smoke in bars. If there was a demand for non-smoking bars, they would already exist. I didn't know you could legislate people to not stink. I propose a ban on shitting. So you think smoking in bars is morally wrong but still partake? Because marijuana smoke is so much better for you, and smells so delicious. Hypocrite.
Well let's forget about freedom for non-smokers/smokers for a minute, what about the freedom of the owner of an establishment to choose for himself what kind of place he wants?
Costmetics should be banned under that reasoning - I don't want their residue in our water (ie: doesn't break down).
Quebec is actually way behind on the times. We've done it in BC a long time ago. You can't smoke in bars, restaurants, not even on restaurant balconies. You can only smoke on your own property or places that other people aren't stuck staying withyou at (like bus stops). Guess what else, since then, we've had the lowest smoking rate in all of Canada. And also, a woman in Ontario has just died from second-hand smoke from working in a restaurant that allowed smoking. It's a good thing they're limiting the freedom of smokers. Allowing smokers to damage other peoples' health without their permission is like slowly tightening a noose around a person's neck in public and having no one say it's wrong. I HATE it when people light up a smoke around me, although it doesn't happen as much anymore living in BC. It gives me migraines and I hate the smell - it makes me repeatedly sneeze. I really hate it when I'm in the back seat of a car and someone lights one up and opens there window as if the wind isn't blowing it into my face. Also, cigarettes thrown out the windows of cars cause a lot of BC's summer forest fires. So basically, there's no real positive about cigarette smoking. Soooo, I wouldn't complain.
