Has anyone experimented with worm bins much?? I have been reading a little about it and I know worm casts are amazing for the soil, just wondering if anyone has actually or is playing around with worms and how it is going..it sounds like it could be messy, maybe not though..any info??

    Hi earthfriend:)

You can get really good results using a worm farm thingy. It's really easy to do and we bought our worms at the same place that we picked up the worm compost system. It's best to place the bin in the shade so the worms won't overheat (mine sits under a tree in the garden). I fill it throughout spring, summer, autumn and maybe into winter with leaves, vege scraps, lawn clipping etc, and water it now and again to keep it moist. The worms do the rest and throughout this time pure, home made, organic fertilizer can be collected from the bottom. Another tip, as with all compost bins, piles etc is to 'turn it' every few weeks. Use a turning fork or improvise with a long stake like I do. Also, when I collect the compost, I make sure most big worms and castings (they are easy to spot) are put back on the top of the bin, and so to continue on their merry way making organic fertilizer.
In winter, or sometime well before spring planting, I empty the entire lot onto my vege patch and it spread around for later planting. I save as many worms and castings as I can from this and start the the bin again at the beginning of each season!

    Happy gardening & peace!

I have been keeping one since last summer. I dont think its doing to well... its in one of those large rubber/plastic garden bins, I have holes punched in the bottom for water drainage, and its in semi-shade... is that a bad thing to put them in?
