I had an interesting experience today at work...
i'm fairly new to barefooting and haven't had to defend it yet, until today.

A co-worker of mine refused to go on a walk with me at lunch because I was going barefoot. I wasn't so much put off by that but by the things she said about barefooting. Among the things mentioned were how dirty it was and how unhealthy it was. I immediately defended barefooting to the best of my ability.

I know there are other threads on this forum where people have talked about defending themselves in stores etc. Has anyone ever had to defend themselves to a good friend (i'm sure someone has). What did you say?

I have friends who think barefooting is totally cool and the only way to go and then I have friends on the total opposite end of the spectrum. Needless to say that I am closer to the first set of friends.

i find most people listen to reason on the subject. After all, reflexology seems to be more and more widely known and accepted. How far away from reflexology is barefooting?

If people really make a huge fuss... they ain't worth knowing anyways....

I never went barefoot to work, it wouldn’t be appropriate. But , if I did and someone get there buns in a knot, Id just say to each to own and smile.
P.S., I could only wish we had a female barefooter where I work, Id be in heaven :)

I believe it was disrespectful of her to insult your preference for going barefoot. You shouldn't have to defend yourself in this regard. I recall a page in the January, 2005 Glamour magazine in which a writer went barefoot into a public restroom after Britney Spears did so. Then she went barefoot in a park. She thought both were gross and unsanitary. She asked another woman to hold on a fountain valve so she could wash her feet. The woman appeared horrified!

If going barefoot is comfortable to you then that should be respected. It's your right! As far as being dirty, yes your feet will get dirty. To me that is the mark of a true fulltime barefooter. There are many common things that can be considered 'dirty'. Oral sex, changing diapers, fixing a flat tire, etc.

You may respect her preference for shoes and she should respect your preference for bare feet.

I always retort "better to walk barefoot than to lay my hand on that germ infested shopping cart handle you're currently touching". You see, very few people really think about the things they touch, yet, they get all uptight about being barefoot any other place than their home.

I don't come to work barefoot; I just walk on my lunch hour barefoot.
Thank you all for your replies, I greatly appreciate it.

It's funny how most people have no reservations going barefoot at a swimming pool where everyone else has walked barefoot themselves.

I can come up with quite a list on other behaviors than are more disgusting an even down right unhealthy than going barefoot, which by the way IS very healthy.

friends dont say shit to me....my family however say shit all the time....ALL THE F'n TIME.......but they know they cant really phase me....so who cares...I just do my own thing......I have a real religious family and it was funny cause someone said..."God gave you shoes for a reason." Which I thought was hilarious and I said..."What? I have never heard that on the 6th day God created shoes and it was good, haha....think about this....Jesus wore sandals and went barefoot all the time...thats why there was a foot washing custom....you wore sandals if you were rich back then.....So I guess Jesus was wrong for wearing sandals too?....man his feet must have been sun burnt all the tim in that hot midlle eastern sun...." I didn't get a reply back after that one lol.

That's the way I'm probably going to go with it this year. Most times I'm up against monumentally stupid people with whom it's a total waste to try to explain/argue. I've tried the deaf ear when they comment on my shorts, and it seems to totally disable them---hanging and frozen like a locked computer---come spring I'll try it with rude comments about my bare feet.

Actually, they do worse than that. It's not likely that a clean body will be introduced into a pool. Hence the need for all that chlorine, I guess.

Brandon- good comeback to your family. I can't believe they actually tell you that God gave you shoes for a reason. Next time they say that, tell them that Adam and Eve were created naked and shoeless!

Adam and Eve were naked and shoeless until God gave them shame. Then the whole world was damned to wear shoes for the rest of eternity.
